They had at least two 'prime' periods of their career, but it was great fun buying their first four albums when I was 13 - 15. Bee Gees 1st really grabbed me, Horizontal and Idea followed in rapid succession. Odessa is one of my all-time favorite albums. I loved Trafalgar and was on-board with Main Course. I only bought their singles from Saturday Night Fever onwards, but have since filled in the missing albums. As autumn daze said above, their lows were never too low. I have great appreciation for ESP and Still Waters. The album covers for To Whom it May Concern, Life in a Tin Can and Mr. Natural were cut-out-bin-bound the minute they left RSO's art department, but I especially like Tin Can... it's even more satisfying when fleshed-out with the non-LP tunes, Wouldn't It Be Someone, Elisa and King and Country (all three destined for the lost album, A Kick in the Head...). They may have been artistically out-of-sync during that early-70's period, but they still knocked-out great songs. I love the Bee Gees. I guess that we should feel lucky that we got the fine reissues of the first four albums. I wish that the series had continued, but it happened a little too late in the CD game... and in the lives of the brothers Gibb.
Bought most of their pre disco records over the past few years. Thats was quite fun, To Whom it May Concern is one of my favourites. A consistent album with fine production and a good variety of styles. Paper Mache is one of the oddest sets of lyrics I have ever come across, not in a self concuss way either I think. Love the imagery though. The drama of the vocal singing about the paper mâché is something to behold. Then there's I Held A Party, unbelievable. Pulsating harpsichords, gothic choirs and Robin's lament that no one came to his party. There was the confused 70's Beach Boys, then there was the confused 70's Bee Gees. Paper mache and telegraph poles Things go dead in the night Make enough noise to make enough noise To make you want to jump with fright Elephant's tusks and autograph books, people you don't meet Haven't got a bed to lay my head, shoes to fit my feet Don't be scared You're better off then nothing You're answering to no one Paper mache Paper mache and telegraph poles Thing go dead in the night Make enough noise to make enough noise To make you want to jump with fright Elephant's tusks and autograph books, people you don't meet Haven't got a bed to lay my head, shoes to fit my feet Don't be scared You're better off then nothing You're answering to no one Paper mache All of a sudden it happened When you did what you said you'd do And you broke my heart in two Like paper mache All of a sudden it happened, oh, You came into my life Like paper mache you broke my heart Like paper mache, paper mache Like paper mache Paper mache and telegraph poles Things go dead in the night Make enough noise to make enough noise To make you want to jump with fright Elephant's tusks and autograph books People you don't meet Jimmy had a bomb and the bomb went bang Jimmy was everywhere Jimmy had a bomb and the bomb went bang Jimmy was everywhere
I forgot about this one! Man, I wish they would officially release more of his stuff. Thanks for posting! To Whom It May Concern is definitely in my top 3 Bee Gees albums. Such an eclectic and moody album that kinda wanders all over the place....it just works imo lol. This, to me, was one of their finest albums in terms of vocal harmonies. I just love it.
While we're on the topic of To Whom It May Concern, can I just say the Gibb Collective (aka, the Bee Gees children) did a darn good job when they re-did Please Don't Turn Out the Lights a couple of years ago? Spencer Gibb (Robin's son) Stephen Gibb (Barry's son) Samantha Gibb (Maurice's daughter) Adam Gibb (Maurice's son) Peta Gibb (Andy's daughter)
Spencer and Samantha seems to be joining forces on some project lately, as they are currently recording strings with the Czech Philharmonic and Ludek Drizhal in Prague for "The Ghost Twins". Ludek has worked with Spencer on past projects. The Ghost Twins
Made my own expanded edition of the Gibb Collective a while back, adding past recordings that have or have not been commercially available over the years: The Gibb Collective: Please Don't Turn Out The Lights (Expanded Edition) 1. Samantha Gibb: New York Mining Disaster 1941 (2:19) 2. Spencer Gibb: Don't Fall In Love With Me (4:17) 3. Samantha & Adam Gibb: Morning Of My Life (2:49) 4. Stephen Gibb: On Time (3:41) 5. Samantha & Adam Gibb: Angel Of Mercy (4:19) 6. Stephen, Spencer, Adam & Peta Gibb: Please Don't Turn Out The Lights (2:18) 7. Travis Gibb: I've Gotta Get A Message To You (3:34) 8. Peta Gibb: Fool For A Night (3:27) 9. Berri Gibb-Rhoades: I Can't See Nobody (4:27) 10. Robin-John Gibb: I Started A Joke (2:42) Bonus tracks 11. Samantha Gibb & Majandra Delfino: Angel of Mercy (4:50) 12. Spencer Gibb: Run to Me (4:06) 13. Stephen Gibb: Living in the Rain (4:21) 14. Samantha Gibb: Hold Her in Your Hand (3:47) 15. Berri Gibb-Rhoades: I'm Not Wearing Make-up (4:33) 16. Robin-John Gibb: Instant Love (4:08) 17. Samantha Gibb: If I Can't Have You (2:40) 18. Spencer Gibb: Massachusetts (2:41)
The Samantha and Majandra version of Angel of Mercy was/is posted on youtube as was Spencer's version of Massachusetts, neither have had commercial releases. Run to Me was released on a tribute CD featuring children of famous parents. Living in the Rain was posted online by Stephen way back when, it might be available on youtube too, no commercial release so far. Hold Her in Your Hand and If I Can't Have You was a CD single sold through CDBaby, don't think it's available now. Instant Love as sung by RJ (with his father's voice present seeing as it is based on the same backing track as the original solo version) was the version that was featured in the vampire short film "Blood Type: The Search" and was posted on RJ's website at the time.
SAME! The only disc I've actually thoroughly played. My dying question is, whatever happened to the re-recordings of the songs in 'Keppel Road'? I've asked it before, but I'll ask again. In particular, 'Gotta Get A Message To You'. It has been professionally recorded, and they even did a film clip for it, so I would have imagined the re-recording would appear somewhere else in some form. They briefly used it in the film, but it's a lot of trouble to go through the whole process just to utilize the few seconds that they did. I even thought it may have turned up as a CD single extra, when those were a thing at the time. Here is the clip I'm referring to, it starts at around 22:58
Simple, they were just live studio performances done for the Keppel Road doc. Nothing more, nothing less. The only one of these recordings that made it out was the Stayin' Alive version that was included as a B-side to various cd singles in '97 and that recording was ultimately not included in the documentary despite being filmed and all. They were never really considered for commercial release.
It seems like a lot of work that was put into these performances though, when they could have dug into the archive and used their already famous recordings and footage from the past....... You may be entirely correct, I just don't 'buy it'. For the few seconds of audio and visual that was used, where is the rest of it? That's what I want more of.
The rest is on the editing floor. They were in the midst of the Still Waters sessions, they had the studio and band at their disposal and shot the band doing their "greatest hits" and edited it down to what they needed. That's it.
Perhaps so. Still, these are pretty professionally recorded. The multitracks and video would still be available. Would make a great collection of reissue material which probably wont happen anytime soon.
It was a live studio recording, I seriously doubt they used a plethora of tracks to capture it but, yes, these along with the live version of Stayin' Alive would still exist and likely the video material as well. I don't think we'll ever get to hear or see it released in full.
Me either. Not in my lifetime. There's a giant boxset of 'unofficially' released material sitting round that would make many Bee Gee fans go crazy! We've had stuff from The Beatles, Stones, Pink Floyd, Springsteen, Beach Boys etc etc..... Nothing! from The Bee Gees. Disappointing for fans.
I basically only picked this up for "One Bad Thing" as I've got the '94 "Enter Stage Left" comp already. I can only hope that if this does well maybe we'll get reissues of the studio albums down the road with some bonus tracks even.
Maurice had been working out of Recorded Sound Studio and this is where he and Robin would start to record their sessions before switching to De Lane Lea shortly before Barry re-joining. Regarding Barry and Robin only singing on songs they wrote, well, that's not entirely correct as the title track (for one) which initially started out as "I Can Laugh" had an a capella opening added later as well as dropping the title as sung to "2 Years On" instead by all three in unison with some backing vocals featuring Barry too (notably the aaah's). There may be others but the above I compared quite recently so they're fairly fresh in my mind. The album isn't a favourite of mine so I don't listen to it as frequently as the others. Out of the early R&M sessions only the previously mentioned song plus "Sincere Relation" (originally "Distant Relationship") and "Lay It on Me" made the cut when finishing the album. Barry is confirmed sitting in on the August 18 session.
