Or it may be the record company's non-malicious technique for discouraging copying (?) (if it plays just fine but won't rip correctly) I had a CD once that played fine but ripped with the same errors on
many different drives, whatever drive I attempted it on.

Well, non-malicious in as much as attempted ripping doesn't permanently destroy your computer's hard-drive, like the malware Sony once intentionally installed in their CDs sold to customers, for which which I understand they were sued and lost.

    *edit :

While it is true we are allowed to make digital copies of music that we own physical copies of, for personal use, it is also not illegal for companies to copy-protect their product, in a non-destructive manner, of course

    Interested in other experiences here.

If this is a common problem then Universal can go feck off then.

Burned all three CDs to iTunes last night with no problem - have an iMac with Apple's Super Drive.

    iTunes is no 'secure' ripper.

Same except I used a Samsung drive. Haven’t done anything with the Bluray yet although I don’t intend to rip that one.

What’s your point? Never said it was.

OP asked if anyone was having problems digitizing their box set. I assume burning the CDs to iTunes qualifies as digitizing them. Please feel free to correct me if I’m wrong.

iTunes doesn't do a thorough check, like EAC with accuraterip. Therefore it is entirely possible that your rips contain small undetected errors, like those noticed by the OP.

Personally, I only consider a 100 percent bit perfect rip a good rip. Off course your opinion may vary.

Were these discs manufactured by Optimal by any chance? I've noticed CDs pressed there and a couple other plants often have errors.

Yes. Disc two locked up on ripping the second to last track, with the drive starting to repeatedly make its usual sounds over and over again, as if the track the laser is on got jammed somehow. The on screen “stop ripping” button wouldn’t respond; the only way I could stop it and get the CD out was to press the actual button on the drive. The CD shows no physical damage or defects.

Yup, I spent 4 hours on it last night. The BD worked fine, after I backed it up. But the two CDs with bonus tracks gave me an awful time. I use EAC, it would rip the first 4 tracks or so, then get a sync error. I would try just one track at a time, was taking forever.

I tried the CDs in my external BD drive, same problem. Finally I used "Paranoid" mode in EAC, that worked but still gave some trouble. Never have had CDs like this before.

Yes, the last two tracks on discs one and two of the Super Deluxe box for me. Luckily, I could replace these tracks with identical rips from the two disc set.

I have the two CD version, and both CD's ripped perfectly with dBpoweramp (iMac with Apple Superdrive).

I haven't gotten the Abbey Road box set, but I have had the same thing happen when I burn CD's that are over 75 minutes long (even though they can hold 80). Is disc two longer than 75 minutes? My Sony Vaio laptop is 10 years old and has trouble with long discs. It is frustrating.

Possibly but more likely to be a poorly manufactured disc. These used to be uncommon and are becoming more common now IME. Many CD plants are closing or have closed and record companies are using the cut rate ones now to press discs. So sync and read errors become more common.

I ripped my 3-CD set using dBpoweramp with no issues. It took a while, though. I used secure mode.
