Man listening to Dave's Picks 24 (8/25/72) and the "Bird Song" is mindbogglingly good. Actually, the whole first set is smoking. I'm not sure why this Pick doesn't get more love--it sounds amazing.
See, the GoGD did something of pretty much everything, just not when you expected it or necessarily wanted it. But it happened. Well, there were issues, so to speak. But I eventually pledged to avoid further discussion after the kerfuffle that ensued, so I'll leave it to others to expound upon if they see so fit.
It just happens to fall between two all-time classics, and I could take or leave most of the first set before "Bird Song," but I wouldn't kick it out of bed for eating crackers.
Ok--I need to check out those other two shows. But I dug the first set more than I thought--"Loser" and "Black Throated Wind" are great--and the Bird Song/ PIB are fantastic. Also like hearing Keith up in the mix.
Well, General, you blew the top of my head off with this one. I'm not through it yet, and unfortunately, it's bedtime for Bonzo here. The kiddos are going to be up at 6 whether I want to be or not. I'm going to have to get her going again tomorrow. But this is the best post-Brent Show I've ever heard, easily. Right off the bat and right on through to where I am now - having to shut it down after Rider. It feels like one of those great, aggressive, 78 rocket fuel shows, albeit with an older, less fired up Jerry (but still more fired up than I've ever heard in this era), and a little too late 80's early 90's sounding drums and keys, but whatever. Looking forward to the rest of the show. I'll put it in rotation for the weekend.
Well, you've dug a massive hole for yourself. You actually need to check out some 1,000 shows and then you'll be almost halfway to what you need to check out. I'm sorry; I didn't do it.
I think that you mean Veneta, OR. You've contracted a rare variant of bfzfgt syndrome. Not to worry; it's not contagious nor life-threatening. But not anyone's wife. I'm completely happy with mine. Ooof, @DocShipe don't pay us any mind when we go off the rails. We're a buncha whack-jobs here, but we do know of what we speak. Go to youtube and search on "Grateful Dead____[insert year here_____] and figure out what time frames appeal to you. You can always stream at Grateful Dead or try to find physical product if that's how you roll. Either way, welcome to the insanity. It's not as crazy as it may seem.
What was everyone's first tape aka Taper's Section contraband ?* Mine was 4/7/85 Spectrum. Sophomore year HS. My one classmate/buddy worked in the kitchen at a local hospital with a Deadhead. I asked him if he could get me a show and this was the answer. I've been a huge fan ever since. God bless the Grateful Dead and God bless Weirdness in all shapes and sizes. *
Oh, I wanted to get a good book about the GD, so I shagged this one since it was pretty highly recommended by a lot of fans... I'm currently reading George Clinton's Autobiography
I love this book. Scully seems to get a lot of specific dates/places wrong, but he really captures the vibe.
I would be curious to hear where 6/17/76's "Slipknot!" (Dave's 28) ranks among those five. Maybe an excuse for you to give it another spin? Edit: I'm spinning the audience tape of it right now on the 'chive. Very nice.
Well... Next is about 36 Dicks... Uh... maybe I should rephrase that... BUT... I have an advantage. I will be skipping all the Cowboy songs!
One thing that's clear while listening to this 6/17/76 audience recording is that, whatever we may feel about it over 40 years later, a significant portion of the Deadheads were digging the disco arrangement of Dancing in the Street when it was debuted in June '76. There is a lot of clapping along and shouting.
I've always dug it. When I 1st bought Terrapin Station around 1978 or so, I loved the overall consistent mood and style of it. It was COMPLETELY different from anything they had done before. And, I certainly had never heard ANYTHING like it!
