My wife and I love that film, but not the version released on DVD and BluRay. Coppola took the words of the critics to heart, and changed it to meet their complaints and it lost the magic. The version that played in the theater, was released on VHS and LaserDisc flowed from scene to scene. Literally. For instance, at the beginning, the curtains open and the camera moves around these beautiful miniature Las Vegas signs, passes through one, floats down into the Fremont Street and up to the window that Teri Garr is decorating, through the window, and into the travel agency office she shares with Lani Kazan. She looks into a mirror, complaining of grey hairs, and the mirror changes into the mirror that her boyfriend is looking into, looking at his own balding head. It continues like this, flowing from scene to scene, using every trick available to the filmmaker before digital - scrims, half-silvered mirrors, lighting changes. At the same time, the soundtrack by Tom Waits and Crystal Gail functions as a Greek Choir with the lyrics saying what the leads don't actually say to each other. If you don't listen to the lyrics of the songs as the scene happens you will not get half the story. The re-edited version loses a lot of the scenes, adds others, but loses the song continuity. It becomes a much more typical romance. I wish Coppola would release an "Original Cut" BluRay for those of us who love this film as he originally created it. The folks who didn't love the original will never love the version with a facelift and implants.
A Shock To The System (1990) Michael Caine at his nasty best. He plays a man who is passed over for a promotion by a younger man, and once he gets away with murder keeps on doing so. Roger Ebert loved it.
Very interesting, I didn't realise One From The Heart was changed for DVD and BluRay. This is one of the few films I can remember going back to the cinema to watch again almost immediately. Magic is the right word, I am at a loss to understand how such an innovative, beautiful and heartfelt film got such bad reviews on release. I know Coppola unnecessarily tinkered with The Outsiders, changing the music and making some edits. I managed to get the original version on a Spanish DVD, but it is poor quality picture and sound. I really wish they would give the option to watch the original version when films are messed around with like this.
This film is available on BD, in the U.K., via the BFI. Brilliant performances from John Hurt and David Warner, and a very sharp change in tone toward the end. “You can’t afford real corduroy!” This line gets referenced on occasion in our household.
Before there was "The Revenant"..there was, "THE REVENANT"! Contains THE FUNNIEST use of a vibrator in ANY MOVIE.....EVER!
Folks from Australia will know this film, but it made virtually no impact in the United States. Bliss is one of our 3 favorite films from 1985, along with Birdy and Brazil.
A Very Long Engagement is one of the most beautiful films I've ever seen. Watch it at least once a year.
Rickman was wonderful in a couple of small films when he played nice guys: Calendar Girl with Kevin Kline as a police detective who quit, became a fireman, and was convinced to return to solve one case. Alan Rickman played his best friend. "See a burning building, run inside of it. Basically a maniac's job." Truly, Madly, Deeply. Similar to the movie Ghost but not as stupid. Rickman returned from the dead for his girlfriend who can't let him go.
I've seen it. Great movie sadly only available on DVD. Truly Madly, Deeply is still MIA on Blu-ray (I had it recorded on VHS from a showing on cable for years). The President's Analyst got lots of play midday on our 3:30 movie on the ABC affiliate. I fell in love with it. Beware the phone company. Saw Battle of Algiers years ago, it's still a great movie but hard to watch again.
