So Eric Kloss was the first exposure to jazz for MANY children across the United States. He very likely was the leader in this achievement, above all others. Yet Eric had a childhood different from virtually any other, a blind musical prodigy who collaborated with the giants of jazz as a child. He has been struggling for several decades. All that music that he wants to play!
For me, this is the version of the Concierto by Laurindo. Unlike most others, it is all solo guitar. It was issued in many editions here is the CD
but now Miles Davis: Scetches of Spain And many thanks to @Tribute for his recommendation! Are there some more (jazz) versions of this wonderful music - beside the original from Rodrigo?
Of course the famous one, led by Jim Hall with Chet Baker and Paul Desmond. Tete Montoliu also did it on piano on his album called Man from Barcelona. This title exists with several different front covers I can hear the entire Adagio in my head on tenor sax, in the "big horn" style popularized by such players as Sam The Man Taylor and Sil Austin. I listen to one recording, and simultaneously imagine the same tune in different arrangements, in different tempos, with different instrumentation or with different singing voices. That's how I spend much of my deep listening. One thing is playing, but I am hearing something else. I'll hear the Concierto theme played on solo violin, or solo double bass, or in acapella performances by voices that never existed. The better the original performance on a real recording, the more it sends my mind into hearing other interpretations while listening. Records are just a starting point for me.
Regarding Rodrigo's Concierto, I believe there are a number of classical guitarists that have recorded just the Adagio theme alone (as solo guitar or with orchestra) and put it on a mixed bag type album of "Encores" or highlights. Some of these albums may be presented as new-age style, mood music albums for relaxation or romance (different activities! romance is not necessarily relaxing!), by guitarists that are not well known. I sometimes pick these albums up at garage sales, but cannot name any or access them in my collection.
As far as I know he has at least 2 LPs recorded for the Muse label. Here is the second LP. Muse MR 5077 [1975] Eric Kloss " Bodie's Warmth - Engineer: Ed Stasium - Producer: Michael Cuscuna
Not only guitar players. Bill Holman did a wonderful arrangement of this composition for the big band of radio Frankfur (= HR big band) t and I have it on reel. It was later issued on an official recording. Have to look up that recording.
Muse was a good company, run by good people. But some artists (for Muse and other labels) had to pay all session costs up front, which could run into many thousands of dollars. This often limited an artist's ability to record. I don't know if this applied to Eric, but it did apply to my friend Mark Murphy. Eric was only 29 years old when he was able to make his last recording for Muse in 1979. With that album, at age 29, he had 18 albums under his name. Then there was one album for the truly independent small label Omnisound.
MJQ has recorded the most famous composition by Joaquín Rodrigo at least twice: MJQ* - Space and with Laurindo Almeida: The Modern Jazz Quartet Guest Star Laurindo Almeida - Concierto De Aranjuez There is also the rendition by piano duo Corea and Rubalcaba with Spain on Rendezvous In New York.
Miles Davis Quintet - Steamin` With The Miles Davis Quintet (Prestige VICJ-60128) This is the XRCD version of this great album. What version do you prefer ?
I have XRCD versions of Walkin', Steamin', Workin' and Relaxin' in LP facsimile versions and listen to those the most.
Duke Pearson - Mosaic Select (Mosaic Records MS-008) Lot of love for M. Pearson lately on this thread...for good reasons !
Re Concierto De Aranjuez East Wind EW - 8063 "Concierto De Aranjuez" - Laurindo Almeida - Engineer: Don Snyder issued 1978 in Japan by Nippon Phonogram Co., Ltd Side B: Songs from Black Orppheus OOOPs I overlooked the same versions above. Anyway I do agree it is "the" version. But I do like also my version with the MJQ & Almeida. and here is the version with the HR big band
Can’t go wrong with Zoot Sims. I also understand your setup a bit better now. I was curious how you were keeping the pillow under the turntable level in your previous photo
Paco de Lucia did a version on an official DVD video in 1986 He did a studio recording of the full concerto in 1991 Paco de Lucia - Concierto de Aranjuez
Sunday morning in a few hours and I ran out of ideas about what to play next. Need some inspiration/posts from my peers.
