ok, I don't really have the maniacal collector gene but I do get a giddy wee thrill at seeing Japanese pressing 7"'s out in the wild here in Japan.

so thought I would rummage through discogs chronologically and see just what is out there for random bands.

some of the 7"s I've never even sighted before, at any price.

first up, Roxy Music, seeing as I stumbled across a rad "Musik Laden" performance of theirs on telly last night:

I found it intimidating to look through the many 7" single boxes in many shops in Japan and depended on the shop owners in smaller places to know roughly where I should look. In some places 7" singles were just roughly placed into boxes for Japanese artists and foreign - as I collect some Japanese artists this made things worse! The rarer singles tended to be on display and priced accordingly. It is a lot easier to wade through box after box of 12" vinyl so I find myself doing that more. I think the problem is the design of Japanese singles, with very thin plastic sleeves and those inserts - if a box is packed it seems like a lot of effort to dig. Must try harder next time!

GREAT thread! The search for mega-cool Japanese 7” releases are what brought me to Japan the first time, and still keeps me coming back every year (5th annual just completed - I’m writing from the Limousine Bus en route to Narita at this very moment). I’d like to eventually add some of the rarer Peter Gabriel and/or Genesis 7” releases if I can ever remember how to add images to a thread... in the meantime, thanks for posting.

I have about 8 or so Van Halen 7" Japan picture sleeves that I already scanned and cleaned up. I only scan the front. That's probably the most I have from any artist for a Japan sleeve. I have others also for a website I hope to launch one day showing off my picture sleeve collection. A few of the VH (Van Hagar) sleeves are rentals. More than a few stickers on the fronts so I didn't bother to scan those.

Interesting to me what bands get the j-treatment and from when. Usually Japan missed the first 2 or 3 singles then got on board from there which is understandable. Yet some other bands just seem to fly under the radar in Japan. eg, Van Morrison singles didnt seem to really happen. Or Elvis Costello really.

Really bums me out that you can literally see the geological timeline in the limestone as right at 1988 when the pressings stopped and the switch to ghastly cd singles took over. The day the laughter died.

Yea I have the domain and everything. Over 1000 pic sleeves from various countries ready to go. Maybe one day. I’ll try to load a few Japanese sleeves in here. I have to put some online somewhere to get them in this thread though.

bit of a slow start Japan-wise, looks like nothing was issued until 1979. By which time, I'd argue their best years were behind them.

Love the thread. Thanks for starting it Mr. Dawley. I don’t spend much time at the 7” rack when I shop in Japan but have picked up a few things over the years. Mainly Beatles and Kinks PS but a few other things. Will take some photos and add them when I get a chance.
