If you could upgrade today without damaging the bank balance or upset the wife, what would you have.

    Here's mine... Santa?

Cambridge Audio CX61 or CX81 not sure which
    Cambridge Audio CXC
    Cambridge Audio CXN v2
    Technica 1500C in silver
Speakers? I like my Wharfedale Diamond floorstanders at the moment, but may change them to some Fyne Audio or Tannoy floorstanders

A really expensive R2R DAC and a Pass Labs class A mono block amplifier set. Unfortunately this would upset the bank balance, so it ain't happening unless Santa really does exist.

    I think I'd like:

    1. Schiit Bifrost 2 DAC (I like the modular concept and the connectivity options.)
    2. A really nice SACD player

    (To be updated...)

I would upgrade my amp and speakers only:

Replace my Peachtree Audio Integrated with a Yamaha AS3000 or Pass Labs INT-60
Replace my B&W 685s2 speakers with Harbeth Super HL5+

This is my upstate summer/weekend/retirement home plan for a few years from now. I'm not sure I could find room for these in our current tiny Brooklyn apartment, but it would be fun trying!

I’d buy a bunch of old t4p/p-mount cartridges to try in my turntable.

Probably a Roon Nucleus or Herbie’s threaded gliders for my speakers.

Have you considered Pioneer's D-07 DAT? It's one of the few pieces of kit I had that I now regret selling.

I have three systems, two unfinished, so my first "upgrade" would probably be...a tech-y guy to help with the re-wiring, cable laying and set-up.

It's only in a situation like this can a fresh pair of eyes say, "Ya know, you should drop-kick that Ford-Aministration-era component, and get one that uses ____." :D

I've never gotten exactly what I wanted in one system, it was always a case of, "I got this and I got this; if I could score a ____, I could have ____."

If was being vaguely realistic.... Auralic Aries Mini for streaming (with the linear power supply). If it’s on board DAC was better than my Dacmagic Plus I’d use it. for DAC also. A pair of Tannoy xt6f speakers for my small space as they’re nearly half price in the UK at present. Then a new amp, Temple Audio Bamtam One.

If I was being unrealistic, £20000 of kit, and a new place to live.

I heard a custom-built system this past weekend that was pretty good. It had all G.I.P. Laboratory copies of Western Electric field coil drivers--a replica of the M-18 woofer (18" driver), a replica of the 555 compression midrange driver, a replica of the 597 tweeter. A tungar power supply provided the DC for the field coil magnets of the three drivers. A Yoshimura Laboratory horn with a quite large and almost square opening was fitted to the compression midrange (the midrange crossed in at 190 hz). The woofer is in a hexagonal cabinet with a partially open back (i.e., open baffle configuration). The system is probably over 100 db/w efficient and was driven by a Western Electric 124 amp.

Dynamics, weight and a sense of large scale where the particular strength of this system. It also lacked any serious horn-type coloration. I don't think it quite matched my own system in one aspect--ability to sound alive and exciting at low volume levels--but in all other respects it was a better system. The night before I heard this system, I heard another quite nice system with Magico M2 speakers, but there simply is no comparison--the old school system was decidedly better (the old school system does cost more than twice the price of the Magicos).

I would also need a place to put this quite large system, unless I were willing to stuff it in my place like Japanese audiophile do with their systems.

Larry, is that setup the system that DejaVu Audio will be bringing to CAF next week?

I don't think Deja Vu is going to CAF. You probably can hear it at their store. It is the system in the main listening room and has a blue automotive paint finish and a big black horn on top. I heard it while Vu was in the process of making adjustments. This is one of the best of his custom-built speakers. I tend to like his custom designs that use YL horns. YL made terrific horns and very good compression drivers too. Their compression tweeters are also good.

Hoo boy... along with paying someone ELSE to fix my busted gear so I don't have to myself?

MR-78, C-33, MC-2125 or better yet 2205 (Dave, if you ever get tired of yours...), XR-290s and/or IDS-25, prob. the 290s. Teac A-450. I'd keep the Sony CD player and Oppo Bluray. And add another couple hundred square feet onto the back side of the house for a bigger, better arranged family room to put it all in.:righton:
