Historically, a musical artist is unethically ripped off by the record labels, the managers, the concert promoters & the bootleggers well before us music fans/record collectors come along to spoil their party! So purchasing used Compact Discs is child's play when it comes to the music industry & the musical artist. There is no such thing as "ethics" in the music business, anyway. Pete Ham (from "Badfinger", RIP) learnt this lesson the hard way.

This is very well said. I’m sure everyone on this forum has supported the industry in happier times (and continue to support it now). We need feel no guilt about picking up S/h bargains.

If they dont get bought from charity shops they get landfilled. Certainly not ethical.
So buy buy buy those used CD's.
    Then enjoy!

I totally agree. Think about how much more waste their would be in the world if every used CD went from original owner to trash can

I purchase a used cd from a shop...they paid for the used copy and are selling it for a profit. The artist already benefitted from the initial sale. The cd shop benefits from a resale. I have no qualms. I didn't steal it.

  6. The artist was paid the first time the cd was sold. After that, he/she/they have no control over what happens to it. Once you sell something, it doesn't belong to you anymore.

    What?? Records are temporary?

    "Too perfect"? "Natural order"?

This is all really hard to take on a serious level. What does "too perfect" even mean? If you're suggesting that CDs will last forever or are somehow sonically "perfect", we all know that's not remotely true. I won't even take a stab at what you mean by "natural order". We're talking about recordings, not some sort of ecosystem.

Not in my opinion. Any time you buy something used, you're "cheating" someone who'd make money if you bought it new...

And this isn't the first time we've debated this subject.

It goes the same way every time! :D

I need to start posting about my chile recipes, and whether corn and potatoes belong there, ethically.

True the artist and / or label was paid when the album was first sold new.

The artist and label do have control at some level. To wit, we are not free to distribute the music ourselves.

We enjoy a limited right to play the music in a non commercial environment.

Use in a commercial venue is different. Just ask a bar or restaurant that has had visitors from BMI or ASCAP.

Buying used CDs is both ethical and legal in the U.S.. First sale doctrine, man!

As far as deleting rips of sold CDs is concerned, you all know that almost no one does that. It's not a big deal, and the record labels aren't looking at it. And, even if they did, there is no way to enforce it and no way to prove anything. But, if it bothers your concience, delete your rips.

Yes it is. Just don't try to sell or give away your copies. No one is looking at giving your significant other or your best buddy a copy of something. But, you cannot mass produce or distribute something. Then they'll come and get you.

Making a copy of your CSN & Y CD may not be legal, but lo one's looking. It's like driving 80 MPH on the freeway that has a 75 MPH limit. It's not legal, but no one really cares except the Dudley-do-rights of the world. Not even the cops parked on the side of the road care. They're looking for the bigger offenders doing 90 MPH.

And that's perhaps the best reason to buy used, getting masterings and mixes not currently available through new product.

Can you provide a legally legitimate link with the exact United States federal statue for this? Thank you.

I'm not going to take your interpretations of it. I want to see the actual wording of a legal document.

    The statute:
    17 U.S. Code § 117 - Limitations on exclusive rights: Computer programs

The interpretation of that statute by federal copyright office as something that applies to all digital files not just software
