A suggestion was made in the old thread to start this one, so I went ahead and created one.

Well, we will hear soon, if the MFSL SACDs sound better or worse than the Platinum SHM-CDs, especially the ST album and Love Over Gold.

When comparing MoFi to Target CDs and jpn Shm-cd/sacd’s...I really hope I will read something different than this traditional bright/not bright issues...

    For the SHM-SACD’s that I have;
    - S/T album; extremly analogue sounding, like an analog tape playing in front of me
    - Making Movies: excellent dynamics, micro and macro
    - Communique/Love over Gold; Ok, but there are some dub tape issues..

    All in my ears :)

I have the SHM-SACD of Making Movies and I hate it; harsh, bright and shrill. I think I only listened to it once (on my old system). Hoping these new ones are the ticket!

I have the first SHM-SACD edition of the ST album. One of the worst SACDs I've heard.

Id say the ST album SHM-SACD is a little bright. Im hopin the MFSL is smoother.

    Oki. I don’t agree.
But this title is either love or hate, I know that.
And I know it sounds different to most other copies out there.

But it was interesting to read the comments by this guy that was close to a 2ch mixdown tape at the time this album was mixed. He said the Jpn SACD in his ears was very close to what he remembered this tape sounded.
If that tape became the official stereo master, that’s another story.

I was there when both of my daughters were being born and they were beautiful. Nothing like the purple blobs on the pictures. Memory is a funny thing.

So what's the worth of his testimony, then?

Exactly. Got LOG on order--those quiet passages in "Private Investigation" are going to be interesting.

I currently have an early, red swirl, “01” matrix, made in Germany, Vertigo, Love Over Gold CD. I’m interested if the MFSL SACD sounds different, and what those differences are. o_O

I got my second shipping notice of the day from Music Direct this afternoon. Checking the tracking I got the same result as previously: “Shipping Label Created, USPS Awaiting Item”.
Now the USPS has joined Mofi in taunting me, apparently.

I don’t believe Making Movies and Communique were issued as Platinum SHM discs. Just the two you listed.

If he has them these are best I've heard. The Blue and Orange swirl W. German releases didn't fare as well for me.

Dire Straits (Japan Target) Warner Brothers/Sanyo 3266-2
Communiqué (Japan Target) Warner Brothers/Sanyo 3330-2
Making Movies (Japan for USA) Warner Brothers/Sanyo 3480-2
Love Over Gold (Japan Target) Warner Brothers/Sanyo 9 23728-2
Brothers In Arms (Japan for US) Warner Brothers/Phonogram 9 25264-2

Making Movies and Communique were pretty good on SHM-SACDs. I have not even ordered them from MFSL.

I have the early SRC WB CD for S/T disc and Making Movies. Since my SACD player is in the shop, I will be comparing redbook layers only.

For the other two albums, this will be my first time. I'll still be posting my impressions of the sound on those, for I am not of the mind that one needs to hear multiple masterings of a given album to be able to identify a great sounding mastering. Plus, I'm a big fan of the work that MFSL has been doing for the last 15 years, so I am optimistic about these Dire Straits SACDs.

for BiA - the very first release (Vertigo– 824 499-2) Mastered by John Dent - the one with the reversed L/R channels (or probably the only one with the correct ones - who knows :)

Knowing that the SHM SACD s/t Sound very good, at least on my subpar system, the communique not so well, hoping that the mfsl sacds would do their magic

Human memory for sound is at best only a few (less than 5) minutes. Anyone stating remembering exactly what something sounds like is full of excrement.
