Me too. It would be the list I’ll respect most! Not meaning I had a chance to get so many of them …

I don’t think there is one single person here who would not appreciate Steves opinion what comes to music!

I just got this disc; I'm listening to it now.

It seems to have a lot of distortion (especially on the bass, as well as all drum accents). Was this album recorded really hot, or did I get a bad copy? The levels look fine - hardly anything over -3dB.

See, this is why I don't offer you guys a list. I never said the Cannonball album was recorded well. It's just a great album.

    What I wrote was this:

"Agreed, an intense performance. Get the cheap OJC CD, it has a bonus track and is a flat transfer from the analog master. Might set you back 8 bucks.. Great album.."

That's why I recommended the cheap OJC CD; the live recording leaves a lot to be desired but what a recording!

    Ah, I see.

No worries, though. I agree that the performance is fantastic! I was just wondering if I got a bad pressing. (Apparently not.) It's certainly a keeper, though. :righton:

    Thanks for the reply, Steve.

    Esa,

If you have the OJC CD that has the extra track you have the best sounding version of this album (besides the 45 RPM I cut)...

Yup, it's the OJC with the bonus track. I'd love to hear your 45 someday!

I assume you had the original tape when you did your 45 version; was it just recorded too hot? Is that what I'm hearing on the CD version?

All of that power-packed music seemed to overload the engineer's portable recording console.. Such is history.

    Nutcracker:
The first Dorati on Mercury Living Presence stereo 1950's

The Ernest Ansermet on London/Decca stereo 1950's

Finally (believe it or not), the Lorin Maazel on Telarc from 1981 is an amazing performance.

You can't go wrong with these three. They are the best!

The MFSL of this one sounds ok and just might be the best, but I haven't found a Japanese 1st pressing to compare it to yet.

All the info I found on that thread was Steve saying, "Also look for the EMI HOLLIES-All The Hits And More/The Definitive Collection two-CD set from a few years later."

Does anyone have a cover scan, catalog number, or tracklisting for this? I have a 2CD set from Holland called The Definitive Collection, issued in 1988. I think this may be the one Steve mentioned, but it does not have the title All The Hits And More. The notes are in Dutch. The catalog no. is EVA 353.395. EVA is described on the packaging as "a joint venture of EMI, Virgin, BMG Ariola". It also says "This CD is compiled in association with EMI, BMG Ariola and The Hollies." The CD is made in W. Germany.

So what do I have here? Is this the set Steve recommended, or not?

I'm not familiar with the set you have, but my guess is: No, sorry - you do not have the set that SH recommends.

    This is what you want:

The Hollies: "All the Hits & More, The Defintive Collection". EMI: CDS 7908502. UK. 1988. 2 disc set. 22 tracks on disc 1; 18 tracks on disc 2.

Here's an ebay auction with the cover art. This is the LP edition, but the cover on the CD is exactly the same.

P.S. If the tracks match up, you may have a German manufactured edition of this collection.

Do you not look in the Classifieds here? I sold a copy of All The Hits And More just last week. If I come across a copy in decent nick I usually buy it and offer it on here where people will appreciate it. Unfortunately the first disk is sometimes fairly beat up on some, and it is very easy to lose the booklet out of those old style fat double CD cases.

I guess I missed your ad, Mick. I'm usually way too slow to take advantage of the Classifieds. All the good stuff is usually gone within minutes.

OK, I give up. Where exactly does one find these legendary Japanese PastMasters BB CDs? I've searched and searched.

Not surprising considering they've been OOP for at least 16 years. I got mine out of our Forum Classifieds and on eBay over the last year or so.

:agree: So far for me as well. I was able to try the W. German Polygram pressing and it didn't measure up to the MFSL in any way at all. I'll keep looking though because I  this album.
