This may have been done before but typing "cover versions" into the search box brings up a huge amount of threads,

Anyway, what are cover versions of songs you didnt know were covers?

Ive only this week found out that Blondie - hanging on the telephone was a cover...

This guy I work with unbelievably didn't know that Disturbed' s 'Sound of Silence ' was a 60's chestnut. He just thought it was an " awesome" song.

Joni Mitchell's Woodstock. Didn't know it was a cover at the time.

Same thing with "Before You Accuse Me" and "Ooby Dooby", re-recorded by CCR.

I didn't know "Manic Monday" was written by Prince. Then when I found out I thought, "If he wrote that then what is he doing dreaming about kissing Valentino?"

This one honestly just happened this morning.

A few days ago, I ordered (for the first time) Stevie Wonder’s Talking Book and was listening to the samples on iTunes. It got to Maybe Your Baby and I could have sworn I had heard that song before by someone else, but couldn’t think where. Then I remembered this morning... It was on Feel from Glenn Hughes in 1995. Guess I didn’t read the microscopic CD liner notes close enough to see that it was a cover.

The one I really slap my forehead over is a riff from Slade on Stage. It was during Dave Hill’s solo. Really cool riff. If I had been a Hendrix fan sooner in life, I would have recognized the riff as the beginning of Purple Haze. When I finally heard Purple Haze some time after that, I had that brief moment of, “He ripped off Dave Hill!”, before it all came clear. Sheltered life, I suppose, that I hadn’t heard much of Jimi’s music at that point.

    What?
I thought Clapton was covering CCR.
I just just checked wikipedia. Time to become more familiar with Bo Diddley deep cuts.

I heard the Matthews Southern Comfort version first. It was a hit, I think, here in the UK.

There were several. But the one that surprised me the most was „Barbara Ann“ by The Beach Boys (covering a song by The Regents).
