I guarantee you’ve seen David Suchet in some movie or other—maybe Executive Decision with Kurt Russell or A Perfect Murder with Michael Douglas.

Don't you mean Christopher Reeve? For me - and I think most of the planet Houston... er, I mean Earth - Reeve is the definitive performance for that character... by a very wide margin indeed. All other actors in that role, past and present and future, will live in his shadow... even he himself lived in the shadow of that role for the rest of his life.

Michael Keaton is also still the definitive Bruce Wayne to me...

He really worked it as well and grew the character of his own accord.

Still more so: Warren Mitchell as Alf Garnett, the British original of Archie.

 

Steve Martin also played Sgt Bilko, which was even more impossible. Phil Silvers was Bilko.
