Electric Circus, Manchester (1977), introducing "Police & Theives":

"This song was written by a wog..." Nervous silence in the hall. "...and if you don't like wogs,... you know where the back door is, right".

The comedy stylings of Jon Auer and Ken Stringfellow is the correct answer.

I saw Leo Kottke in a very intimate setting at Saint Bonaventure University in the 1990s. Maybe twenty people in a small room. Leo didn't seem to mind at all, just played absolutely beautifully and had us all in stitches between songs. My favorite bit, "I met the guy who wrote 'Yummy, Yummy, I've Got Love in My Tummy.' I met him but I didn't hurt him."

I've seen Ian McKaye keep a large audience relatively subdued during a lengthy mid set delay because the venue was oversold and the Nashville Fire Department had to sort it out.

Let's face it, Pete is really The Who's frontman. His between-song banter is often hilarious. I've seen The Who 24 times and there was only one show where Pete wasn't in a chatty mood. :)

    Another vote for Robyn Hitchcock.

    Also, The Vaselines’ Frances McKee.

Both you get a rock show and a comedy act!

Haha, just kidding. But McCartney knows to deal on stage with his fans.

Not everyone loves what he's doing now musically, but Bruce hasn't lost a step as a charismatic frontman.

I’m not really a fan but this was my first thought and was surprised it took nearly three pages to get a mention...He will rock you and he’s a champion too...

Saw Neil Young a while ago and someone shouted “T-Bone!”. He laughed and said “I don’t think I can remember the words to that but thanks for asking!”

Most definitely Frank Zappa, very quick wit, very funny. Would you expect anything less?

Everyone in Barenaked Ladies is a ton of fun between songs.

Fran Healy from Travis always has fantastic rapport with the audience, and just has a great, feel-good vibe about him.

Of the bands I've seen, it has to be Adam Duritz... and by a wide margin.
