You know you're getting old when half (most?) of the artists on your "favourites" playlist have died

Who'd have thought that Iggy would be the last (original) Stooge standing?

 

I still haven't gotten over the death of Hildegard of Bingen.

On the other hand my avatar, Kagamine Rin will still be 14 years old when I die.

Garth Hudson was born in 1937 - younger than Elvis, but in many ways still part of the pre-rock generation. With a few notable exceptions, I don’t think people of that age ‘embraced the chaos and debauchery’ that rock stardom brought.

In 1974, when I was a teen, my father had a good big band collection and a ton of classical, and so I listened to all of it. Thats not 40 or 50 years but then again, pretty hard to find albums made in in the 20s that would still play.

The point lots seem to be missing here - "rock" as we know it today, is largely unchanged since the late 60s or early 70s. Some bands sound like they are still living and recording in 1974. But in 1974, practically nobody was playing big band.

Many teens at least know who some of the bigger acts were.. some get some of the music.

Many dont, and dont care because "its old" and they want their own, new modern stuff. I can understand all that, I suppose.

 

You know you're old when you were a teenager watching The Beatles play on the Ed Sullivan Show.

 

My wife and I worked in the same building. One day, one of the her office assistants saw me in the hallway and casually mentioned that my wife had mentioned that “some TV actor” who was “on some show in the 1980s” had just died. He was talking about Larry Hagman & “Dallas” - he had no idea who that was or the show.

 

When I realized that less time separates Nirvana’s Nevermind and Gorillaz’ Demon Days...

...than separates Demon Days and the present day.

 

When a song that opens with a choir comes on the radio at work, and your co-worker asks why they're playing Christmas music in the summer, and you have to explain to them that it's "You Can't Always Get What You Want" by The Rolling Stones.

 

The Grunge era originated over 25 years ago...seems like not that long ago.
In contrast listening to The Beatles at 10 in 1981 they seemed like already an oldies band even though they broke up just over 10 years prior.

 

When don’t recognize the names of any artists in the Billboard Top 10 or 100 and don’t care.

It was the National Lampoon Radio Hour California Show, John Belushi as someone who slept for 4 years between 1970 and 1974.

 

I was at karaoke, and one of the younger employees asked me if I knew some song by Dido. I actually knew it, and was feeling pretty proud about knowing a song by a younger artist, when she said “I thought you might know it, it’s one of my mom’s favorite songs.”

I realized that the song was already 20 years old.

 

The closest I could get to Dido is Steely Dan.

 

You hear modern hip hop/rap and want to stab your children for thinking it's good.
