Randy Weston - The Spirits Of Our Ancestors (Antilles 314-511-896-2) Once in a while, you find an album that you didn`t know and that blows you away on the first listen. A few months ago, a good friend of mine sent me a list of about twenty albums that he really enjoyed and the list included this Randi Weston album that I did not know about. I listened to it for the first time about six weeks ago and I can`t let it go since. The music (all Randy Weston except one Traditionnal), the performances (fourteen musicians including guest appearances by Dizzy Gillespie and Pharoah Sanders) and the amazing arrangements by Melba Liston makes the album simply irresistible. And the sound is also exquisite. Great music !!
It's hard for me to choose a favorite Randy Weston album but Spirits has to be one of the more ambitious titles. For some strange reason there is a single disc version. Avoid it as you need/want it all.

I'm really enjoying this one, and Both Directions, probably more than i should. I think the thing for me is when i initially caught the Coltrane bug i went on a spree and bought a large amount of his albums in a relatively short amount of time, with some stragglers here and there. And so with some exceptions it's all a bit of a mush for me, because i listened to it all 'all at once'. And then Both Directions and Blue World have come out after the dust has settled so to speak, so i've lived with these 'new releases' in real time and really digested them. So weirdly they're kind of favourites for me, they 'stand out' purely because of the way that i've experienced them. I've just enjoyed listening to them so much.
Hanging with Hope and his friends..and a glass or two of my friend Great set from ‘61 (part Trio and part Sextet)
NP Art Pepper Friday Night At The Village Vanguard Ive been looking for this for some time me and it popped up at a local shop in NM condition for 11 bucks CAD. Happy indeed. Knowing nothing but the reputation of this record ( but having a deep love for All things Pepper) I just finished my virginal listen Of side A and well damn if that wasnt one of the most beautiful sides of jazz I ever did hear. I love when you love something that much on first listen...
No, not for me for LONG listening. I can wear them about 90 minutes without being uncomfortable. Great sound with most of the amps/components I use though. I also have Sennheiser HD800S which are more comfortable for longer periods.
