It is hard to get this just right. Because they often have Elvis announcing the next song on the tail end of a track rather than at the beginning of the track of the song being introduced! The running order and even song content between the two concerts are different in many places. My running order is often confounded by this. This is why I want Sony to do it right.

This is one of those songs that I wish was a fixture in his show in the early 1970s!

Unfortunately pretty standard fare on live albums on CD. Each track must start with the music, apparently.

Yeah I have found the problem when trying to pull together concert recordings from Bic Runga and Heather Nova where songs from the same concert are strewn across several releases.

If you use iTunes you can set start and stop points for each track so that it will omit the dialog that messes up the flow of your tracklist.

EIC should have been on the album collection. I bought the 60 CD set and when I realized it wasn’t on there I ordered the 1994 CD of EIC to have it on CD. Luckily it was only like 5-6 dollars including shipping on eBay

Just noticed that the EIC version of "My Way" uses that same damn applause loop.

Felton LOVES applause loops. Ala I Can't Stop Loving You from 1969 (not applause but a LOOP for sure). Compare it to the unadulterated version on the new Live 1969 box and you have to wonder what in the hell was he thinking? I think I may change the nickname I gave him from Failtone to Felton "I like to dick with it" Jarvis.

I Got A Woman/Amen ? It would be greatly improved if the Amen part were not included. ANY concert would be better without the JD DB (dive bomb) I like neither the Stamps nor Voice. One sounds more like the Statler Brothers and the other sounds like Jesus Freak Christian singers. I prefer it when Elvis still had The Imperial Quartet. Of course I ALWAYS like the Sweet Inspirations.

I much prefer that to the alternative. I hate having to sit through introductions/clapping/etc. when I really just want to hear the song.

I know it's not practical for a commercial CD, but my personal preference is to place all non-music elements on separate tracks, which is what I always do whenever I rip a concert DVD (even if the spoken bit is only a sentence...I get a bit obsessive-compulsive about giving myself the opportunity to hear a concert with just the music).

i think you have some level of denial going on !

i have already addressed this in this thread, his voice actually wasnt shot at all - it was compromised & affected when he was full of drugs !

ive already used it as an example & it IS the best example, after he was detoxed (by all accounts quite seriously) in early 75 , he sounded better for the TODAY sessions
AND the spring vegas engagement than he had sounded since i would say 69 !

i tend to think 1970 but actually some of the june nashville recordings are rather spotty ! so maybe feb 70 !
he has a richness, depth & absolutely spot on vocal control he hadnt had in years -

if it sounds like im exaggerating then play the out-takes of "burning Love " then
"And i love you so " & "Green Green Grass"

thats all the evidence i need that actually his voice wasnt technically shot to pieces at all by over singing or lack of warm ups etc etc - it was probably getting better with age as it goes but not when he was overflowing with drugs ! and again the proof is all there - listen to the december 75 vegas shows, sounds years away from the march engagement!

he DIDNT keep his chops right until the end , by E.I.C he had probably 25% of his true ability at best

To be fair, it's difficult to separate the deterioration of a voice through abuse and misuse, and what is temporary incapacity due to drugs or an illness. Even from personal experience, drugs/medication and illness can make a huge difference - to a speaking voice as well as a singing one. Codeine will make it dry and raspy, and erode away at the lower register for the most part, for example. And we've all had a cold and found our voice dropping by as much as half an octave - I'm not sure if this is just a male phenomenon? I don't notice it with women as much? Likewise, eating unhealthily can also affect it, because you become tired etc.

How much of that was Elvis's problem in 1976 or 1977? Probably a lot. Compare Elvis's voice in the August 1976 concerts with, say, those on the Chicago Stadium concerts a few months later. OK, he's not on top form, but there is a huge improvement between the two - and if a voice is shot permanently, then that kind of improvement wouldn't be made. The same is true in 1977 during the EIC concerts. June 19th finds him in worse vocal shape that June 21st - and that's just a difference of two days. And going by the range of notes in songs like Hurt and Early Morning Rain (one high, one low) it doesn't appear as if his vocal range is diminishing in the way that it does for most men during middle-age. So it's likely that, with some decent healthy living, some exercise, and some work, he could likely have got back to something like his full potential.

My Way (From Elvis In Concert 21/6/77)
    America The Beautiful *

    (US) RCA PB 11165
    Released: October 28, 1977
    * Recorded: Hilton Hotel, Las Vegas, December 13, 1975 Midnight Show

    [IMG][IMG]

    B-side "America"
    Released October 3, 1977
    Format 7" single
    Recorded June 21, 1977
    Genre Pop
    Length 3:51
    Label RCA Records
Songwriter(s) Paul Anka and Claude François

Elvis Presley began performing the song in concert during the mid-1970s, despite Anka's suggestions that the song did not suit him. Nevertheless, on January 12 and 14, 1973, Presley sang the song during his satellite show Aloha from Hawaii Via Satellite, beamed live and on deferred basis (for European audiences, who also saw it in prime time), to 43 countries via Intelsat.

On October 3, 1977, several weeks after Presley's death, his live recording of "My Way" (recorded for the Elvis In ConcertCBS-TV special on June 21, 1977) was released as a single. In the U.S., it reached number 22 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart in late 1977/early 1978 (higher than Frank Sinatra's peak position), number 6 on the Billboard Adult Contemporary chart, and went gold for its successful sales of over a million copies. The following year the single reached number 2 on the Billboard Country singles chart but went all the way to number 1 on the rival Cash Box Country Singles chart. In the UK, it reached number 9 on the UK Singles Chart.

Elvis' version is featured in the climax of the 2001 film 3000 Miles to Graceland with Kurt Russell and Kevin Costner. (Paul Anka appears in a cameo as a casino pit boss who loathes Presley.)

My Way is a song I have never really been fond of, but Elvis does a good version.
I guess America The Beautiful is just about as US oriented as a song could be. For the longest time I thought it was the US national anthem ... yea I know, I'm an Aussie guys.
This is heartfelt, and well presented, but the spoken section makes me think of William Shatner ... sorry guys, it just does.

I think these are very good points. The kind of person who wants to riff on "Fat Elvis" is not going to pony up for a restored FTD release. They'll just pull it up on You Tube.

For me the seventies aren't the dire mess that many consider them to be.
As it probably shows, I really like a lot of this stuff. For me Elvis peaked in the sixties, but I see no real problem in the music from the seventies. I see a lot of great songs, that are sung well. As always seemed to be the case, management and RCA just wanted to flog as much product as they could. This attitude and obviously the addiction issues led to a disinterest, that sunk the great mans last fling somewhat.
He didn't go out with a whimper in my view. In spite of all the odds against him being even able to function, he managed to squeeze his soul into enough of the very latter day material for it to stand.
I still believe that if Elvis had stepped away and cleaned himself up, he certainly could have made music that would sit quite happily with his best work through the years, but sadly that wasn't to be.

America The Beautiful is one of those songs that I never really cared for until I heard Elvis' version. Granted, it's cheesy as all-get-out in parts ("America...God..."), but that's an essential part of its charm for me. The contrast between believable sincerity and showy camp is improbably effective.

Re: the single version of My Way, is it the EIC album version (with the "I don't know the words to it" part), the Elvis Aron Presley version (no spoken intro), or another mix/edit altogether?
