The rock band Angel, which should have been bigger than it was, came out with "Winter Song" in 1977 on their album White Hot. A year later, (possibly) the original take on the song, "The Christmas Song," was issued to radio as a promo-only 45. Both songs have the same backing track; the only thing different is the lead vocal.

    Here's the Christmas version:

Here's the winter version, which I first heard on American Bandstand way back when:

Kate Bush did an entire seasonal album a few years ago called 50 Words for Snow. She also had a single in 1979 called "December Will Be Magic Again." But this is the Kate Christmas song I like best, a short, sweet B-side called "Home for Christmas":

Holiday Soul by Bobby Timmons (Prestige) is the tops. It recently became available as a download (and on vinyl). Just a fabulous record on any level. I’ve played it at every holiday gathering for the past 30 years (I found a vinyl copy in a bargain bin in the mid-80s) and it’s a huge hit, so much so that before it was reissued I burned up a pile of copies from a needle drop I made onto disc and would hand them out every holiday season.

In the 1970s -- I think it was released in 1976 in Canada and 1978 in the U.S. -- Roger Whittaker released an entire Christmas album of either originals or very obscure covers. In the U.S., it had the title The Roger Whittaker Christmas Album. The highlight for me from this album is "Christmas Is Here Again":

For fans of instrumental Christmas music, Bert Kaempfert's Christmas Wonderland is a must. Released in 1964, it was in print on vinyl and tape for more than 25 years, but it's basically disappeared. My favorite from the album is this ditty called "Jingo Jango":

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind of activity for me. Working 60+ hours a week at my regular job, playing my usual Sunday night gigs with my country band and rehearsing and recording with my new Americana-inspired band. Whew!!! I make Christmas mix tapes every year... well, since 1969 or so. God, I'm old!! Today is my day off and while reading the forum I decided to prepare my first mix tape of 2019 (well USB collection) features all the old favorites: Bing, Frank, Dean, Nat, Andy Williams, etc... but with lesser known and rarely played on the radio tracks. None of the BIG standards, except for a smattering of alternate takes or radio cuts. It's a wonderful listening experience. Songs like Sleigh Ride Serenade, A Winter Romance, A Cradle in Bethlehem, Whatever Happened To Christmas, and dozens more make for a great listening experience.

Tell me if this if song doesn't make you smile and tap your toe a bit. Ron

PS The Mary Chapin Carpenter album is stunningly sublime and the John Klein album will test the limits of any serious system and is an extremely enjoyable listen.

Another recommendation for Jethro Tull's Christmas album.

Also a big fan of Bela Fleck and the Flecktones - Jingle All The Way! Here's a Sleigh Ride straight down the mountainside :D

Ringo playing The Little Drummer Boy just seems so appropriate.
