No notice...just suddenly all items no longer ship to NZ. Looks like we joined Australia. Brought about i assume by NZ following suitwith Australia requiring them to collect GST.

Fortunately Amazon.com (US site) still does as of now. Odd as their system has been set up to collect GST from $400+ for years.

Sucks. Many CDs aren’t shippable to the US anymore too. Usually the cheaper CDs under 5 pounds.

Well that sucks. Hopefully Amazon US stays with us but I have my doubts. Our market is just too small for them to be bothered with processing GST collection.

  4. Amazon sucks. They are doing this to try to dictate to governments about who is really in charge.
Since Amazon geoblocked Australia -and they are the only retailer to use the GST as an excuse to do so-it has motivated me to seek out new overseas retailers .Local retailers charge exorbitant monopolist prices for many things if they can even be bothered to stock them.
May I suggest importscd.com for new releases and JPC.de for box sets.Specialist retailers like Burning Shed as well.
Having access to American Amazon is no worthwhile compromise as for most things they are considerably more expensive than British or European Amazon's.Also the really great cut price bargains are nearly always on British Amazon.
Join the Amazon boycott. They don't care but it will make you feel better.
See you over on Marketplace Discussions.

I've had to order some CDs from third-party sellers. Fortunately, it also works, although it may feel a little riskier.

  6. Fortunately I've almost come to an end of my media purchasing but decided to contact Amazon UK about this after trying a couple of trial purchases and getting the same message each time (
We are unable to ship non-digital items to New Zealand shipping addresses. Please choose a shipping address that is not in New Zealand to proceed. Some restrictions may still apply depending on the item.) Really got no where with the Amazon rep who gave me the usual talk but solved nothing.
Picked several items from my wish list (cd/bluray/book) and same rejection each time. Finally tried reordering a couple of items I purchased last week and again same result, no go.
I would have thought if it was a general shut down of NZ shipping similar to the Australian one that there'd be some sort of media release or acknowledgement.

I do remember a couple of months back that Amazon UK started blocking some purchases at random but there was usually a message on the product page , nothing I can see this time.
I've been a member on the UK branch since 2003 and spent a fair amount of my disposable income with them and if it's the end I can look back on a good run with some great buys.
As stated earlier, it's not the only game in town and the world is our shopping basket.

Hey, those Mad Max movies really make that whole area seem treacherous. Even if technically you are in the suburbs.

  9. How do you boycott a company that won't do business with you anyway?

I spent an hour on the phone with Amazon Customer service - they said it was a block from "suppliers" - i said, no it's all books, cds dvds, blu ray and the supplier IS Amazon! I got nowhere. Either Amazon have not told their staff or they have been told not to tell the truth.

Terrible service to do this with no announcement, like "New Zealand, small place we don't care and we don't want to even bother putting out a statement".

All the more galling as Amazon take full advantage of paying no VAT, paying next to zero corporate tax. The reason their prices are so good is they pay no tax and undercut local providers.

Time to shop elsewhere - the short term gain of low prices actually leaves a bad taste when i know they are forcing small local operators out of business and hope they all fold, and then once they dominate up go the prices

Amazon rules. Move to where civilization is. No use bitching about it here.

Looks like Amazon Germany, Italy and France are no longer shipping out here to NZ either. Existing orders waiting to be shipped don't seem to be affected as far as I can tell.

You can take America as some form of "civilisation" because nothing else matters but cheap prices, and I'll just take New Zealand where people don't carry guns, elect humans to run the country and know a good coffee when they see one.

CD Japan are excellent, although it does cost quite a bit more. Since Amazon UK stopped dealing with us last year, I have also had good experiences with JPC and Import CDs and also with Rough Trade in the UK for independent releases.

  21. I use Import CDs quite a bit, just ordered the Stones Let It Bleed box set from them. With their current ten per cent off they were the cheapest for me. Also used CD Japan and found both Juno Records and Burning Shed good options. I'll be interested to see if this block is permanent or just prep for the upcoming gst change at the start of next month. Whatever happens it's not the end of the world for me.

  22. Don’t spend money on the Australian and American sites that they will let you use

  23. This is the Australian experience 16 months ago.I have yet to find an international retailer of anything who have changed their policy on shipping to Australia as a result of the GST changes apart from Amazon.

  24. So that’s why American Amazon is way more expensive than British or European Amazon’s.Nice try Jeff.
