I have had this set for a few days now but I have only listened to the first two discs. It sounds phenomenal and I am really digging it.

So initial reports are this CD release has not fallen victim to the loudness wars? I have been holding out for the vinyl as yet due to not wanting to chance a CD release full of clipping, over compression and general harsh loudness.

I did not see any mention of missing songs in the liner notes. I am just starting to read the liner notes today but they are nice with nice photos.

Actualy, I am hoping someone will post the DR values of the boxset, then I will decided , if it is for me or not. Thanks to all who are reporting first impression upon hearing the CDs boxset.

I want to avoid at all cost an ELL 50th anniversary kind of release.

I think you guys are going to be pleased with these! Sounds like someone at EH is finally listening!

Disc 1 is the least dynamic because I suspect it's just a clone of the 2016 Machine Gun release. The DR numbers for Disc 1 for Groovy Children match up with that release. The other discs are nice and dynamic (IMO). Only "Wild Thing" from the last show seems to be somewhat low, but it's still a 9!

For the obsessives like me, you'd still need the SACD of Machine Gun if you wanted a more dynamic 31-Dec-69 1st show. I suspect most will be just fine with it as is though.

I'm sorry, but I think "Steal Away" here is AWESOME! They do it slow blues style a la "Bleeding Heart". Very, very nice! I also think Buddy's vocal sound great too. I think this type of material is really in his wheelhouse though. No scatting or "WHAAAAAS" to be found :)!

I can see why they edited "Power Of Soul" on the original LP. They probably wanted to make it more "concise" or they were limited by the LP side length. You're over 3 minutes in before the vocals even kick in. It's so cool to have the whole thing now though!

Oh, and for those of you that like this material and think you can just "do fine" with the boot "Box Of Gypsys", I think you should reconsider. It can't touch the sound quality on this thing. So far it sounds amazing. I'm starting to agree that Bernie might've hit one of the park with his mastering work on this.

You’re right. Let’s just discuss shipping dispatch notices for now instead of hearing about substantive box set content from those who already have the box set in hand.

  20. No tuning issues that caused the cut? That's what I had always heard from people (I wonder where that idea started anyway, if it's a false rumor).

There are a couple of "interesting" parts that sound odd, but to my uneducated ears, no serious tuning issues (if at all). Nothing like "Wild Thing", that's for sure! I clocks in at over 9 minutes, which was more of a reason to edit it IMO. I'd rather they'd left this song intact (or close to it) and cut down on "We've Got To Live Together" honestly, but, as they say, it's already in the history books.

I plan on getting this from local tomorrow. I am always worried about the SQ of these new releases. I, for one, would be grateful for a few more of the sound critiques before spending.
