!!!!!impulse!!!!!art blakey!!!!!jazz messengers!!!!! (Impulse!) CD with Art Blakey (drums), Lee Morgan (trumpet), Curtis Fuller (trombone), Wayne Shorter (tenor sax), Bobby Timmons (piano), Jymie Merritt (bass) - Recorded 1961. Such a great album!!!!
(LP Nessa Records N-7) 1977 .... recorded February 21st, 1976 .... Warne Marsh (ts) + Lou Levy (p) + Fred Atwood (b) + Jake Hanna (dr) .... do firmly believe the seasoned Warne Marsh was at his peak and this formidable Chuck Nessa production substantiates my assertion .... his singular solo work is imaginative though bound to the cool .... off course the classy rhythm section (Lou Levy !!) contributes heavily to this unreserved success .... the CD reissue adds some excellent bonus material, but this original dead silent Nessa vinyl edition is hard to beat ....
(LP Atlantic Red/Plum Label Mono US Press 1330) 1968 .... recorded December 3rd, 1958 @ Coastal Recording Studios NYC..... Jimmy Giuffre (ts, bs, cl) + Bob Brookmeyer (tb, p) + Jim Hall (g) .... Jimmy Giuffre always was a master of nifty arrangements and his closely interwoven joint-venture with Bob Brookmeyer + Jim Hall pays off here big way .... for me Jimmy Giuffre`s finest hour bar none .... subtle and nuanced beauty ....
On this side of the thread I found only records in my own collection (Marsh/Giuffrer/Criss/Vinegar) Here is one more:
Was playing: 'Big' John Patton* – Blue John Label: Blue Note – CDP 7 84143 2, Blue Note – CDP 0777 7 84143 2 2 Series: Blue Note Collector's Choice – Format: CD, Album, Reissue, Repress Country: US Released: 1995 Drums – Ben Dixon Guitar – Grant Green Organ – John Patton Soprano Saxophone, Saxophone [Stritch] – George Braith Trumpet – Tommy Turrentine Recorded July 11 & August 2, 1963. Brilliant album with fantastic songs and top notch playing, especially from the leader who's killing those B3 bass lines. First listen to this album and it rocketed up to the top of my favorite Patton albums. Killer!
NP: Earl Bostic – The Best Of Earl Bostic Label: King Records (3) – KCD-500 Format: CD, Compilation, Remastered Country: US Released: 1988 Bostic is a wizard. Obviously an influence on Coltrane and likely many, many other players. Just brilliant, with masterful technique. Instantly recognizable sound as well.
