Jonathan Miller - RIP

Sir Jonathan Miller, writer and director, dies aged 85

Clive James and Jonathan Miller the same day. Sad news but hell, these two guys were wonderful and contributed so much! I'm no expert on Miller's lifelong work but I always loved his dreamy/weird "Alice In Wonderland" film which was broadcast by the BBC in 1967 or thereabouts:

 

I'm only marginally familiar with either man's work as well. However, I clearly remember that both of them were frequent guests on Dick Cavett's PBS interview show that ran from 1977–1982, which I watched regularly.

Both made for very interesting interview subjects.

Theatre director Sir Jonathan Miller dies aged 85

Doctor, historian, ground-breaking humorist, eminent opera & theater director. A brilliant mind and a lifetime of achievement.

 

Both Miller and Clive James died today.

 

He was an all round arts person who like many at the time arrived in that world arrived at University for formal study in medicine and also being knowledgeable around history too that made a huge contribution in the UK . R.i.p Jonathan.

Not everyone loved him. In Kenneth Tynan's profile of Nicol Williamson the cantankerous actor called Miller "the biggest phony in London".

 

Very sad but he had of course lived a culturally epic life since he started and done everything. His son William's book about growing up in Camden and the people who would come round all the time is well worth a read by all accounts.
