It's what I call 'Reflex Capitalism'.

Basic Capitalist theory states that prices increase when demand does. You bought the item thus creating a demand for it.
The Reflex part is the instant application of the above theory by programmed algorithm.

It can create strangeness when combined with limited stock on the supply side.
EG: 3 ppl buy a common CD which reduces remaining stock to one left. Common product all of a sudden is priced in the hundreds of dollars by the algorithm due to high demand and low supply.

I doubt 'Record Store Day' would be so expensive without this theory!

True - the novelty wears off very quickly when you realise you've been fleeced for hastily pressed sub-par vinyl that invariably turns up cheaper elsewhere. Plus I'm allergic to queues. lol.

I didn't mention it but the sub par vinyl was another major reason.
