Speaking of Philip Bruns, he's a part of one of my favorite replacements in TV history. After playing George Shumway on Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman, when Louise Lasser left the show and it was rebranded Forever Fernwood, his character fell into a vat of Rust-oleum, underwent plastic surgery and came out with Tab Hunter's face!

And then when Bruns returned to the role, they said he had more plastic surgery after a car accident. :D

I wrote the following as part of a post:

I just discovered that I made a mistake in the original post. It was Richard Ian Cox who took over the role of the Male Ranma in Ranma 1/2. Ian James Corlett voiced another character in the series (Dr. Tofu).

I agree. With a show like M*A*S*H you have a number of one-for-one character replacements. Among them are:
    • Trapper John replaced by B. J. Hunnicutt
    • Henry Blake replaced by Sherman Potter
    • Frank Burns replaced by Charles Winchester
The odd one was Radar O'Reilly since his replacement (Max Klinger) was already a regular on the show long before Radar's departure.

Yeah, that's weird. I think they did it because a) it was just a few scenes in one episode, and b) Stiller became so iconic as Frank that they figured it'd confuse syndication viewers to see someone else in the part for that one show!

Sean Young was the original pick for Vicki Vale in 1989's "Batman". However, she got injured during pre-production and was replaced by Kim Basinger.

The irony: Young's injury occurred as she did horse-riding training... for a scene that never made the film!

Also, Annette Bening was originally cast as Catwoman in "Batman Returns", but she had to drop up when she got pregnant.

Michelle Pfeiffer got the part, but Young - still stinging that she couldn't be in the 1989 movie - staged a campaign to get the role. Not only did she fail, but the whole thing made her look like a kook and seemed to damage her career...

According to G.W. Bailey, he/Rizzo was originally to replace Burghoff/Radar as company clerk, but producers changed their minds and gave the job to Farr/Klinger (Farr may have campaigned for the role)

David Ogden Stiers played Scott Norville, the chief backup for “Charlie’s Angels” pilot movie with David Doyle as his bumbling assistant Bosley. Aaron Spelling encouraged the network to drop Stiers as audiences did not react well to him and promote Bosley, making him more competent.
The pilot concentrated heavily on Kelly Garrett (Jaclyn Smith). Originally the plan was to have Kate Jackson in the role since they thought she would be the star, with previous experience in “Dark Shadows” and “The Rookies”, But at the last minute Jackson decided she wanted to play Sabrina Duncan. Farrah Fawcett-Majors, the break out star, really only has one scene.
    Stiers was probably better off getting “M A S H «

Stuart Townsend was originally going to play Aragorn in Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings Trilogy but Jackson found that he actually wanted someone older to play the role, hence Viggo Mortenson landing the role instead. And staying on topic with regards to Peter Jackson, Ryan Gosling was originally going to play Jack Salmon in The Lovely Bones but got fired as Gosling thought that putting on weight for his character seemed ideal at the time, but not according to Jackson. Mark Wahlberg replaced Gosling in the end. And also, Rob Kazinsky, who was originally going to play the Dwarf Fili in the Hobbit Trilogy, actually left production due to a health issue thus Dean O'Gorman taking his place.

Megan Fox got fired by (Executive Producer) Steven Spielberg for Transformers: Dark of the Moon for some comments she made.

James Purefoy was going to play V in V for Vendetta but ultimately went to Hugo Weaving.

James Remar was originally going to play Hicks in Aliens but eventually, Michael Biehn got the role instead.

Also, Tom Selleck could have been Indiana Jones at one point and David Lynch was also offered to direct Return of the Jedi. Just imagine how that film could have turned out...

Also just learned a minute ago that Terry Gilliam was offered to direct the first Harry Potter film, but WB execs decided on Chris Columbus instead. What an incredibly missed opportunity! Apparently, JK Rowling wanted him as did the producers. Already imagining what an amazing film Philosopher's Stone could have been but it seems that Gilliam was relieved it didn't happen as studio interference would have gotten in the way of his work.

Still dreaming of a TV series reboot someday...

Jean Claude Van Damme was set to play the Predator but was replaced by Kevin Peter Hall along with a re-design of the costume to boot.

One aspect of Klinger that seems odd is that he was so determined to get out of the Army in the early episodes (to the point that he was allergic to his Army uniform at one point), yet he ended up staying and becoming a more conventional soldier who longer wanted to leave the Army.

I’m more inclined to think Gilliam would have made a noisy incoherent mess and the series would never have become as successful as it did.

MeTV had the MASH pilot on last night and realized that George Morgan didn’t even have a line of dialogue. He just got to look surprised.

It’s interesting how many people were set up to be semi-regulars and who were quickly dropped (Lt Dish, Ho Jon, Spearchucker, the General). Lt Dish could have been an interesting character and another female character. They never did a whole lot with the nurses outside of Hotlips.

The cast was downsized once it became clear Alda was (in Gelbart's words) "the breakout star". None of these characters were any great loss, though it would have been nice having them around (aside from Ho Jon, he was pretty dull). I would have rather seen Lt Dish or any nurse other than L. Swit, who I never cared for -- especially in the "Margaret" years.

The two characters I would most like to have seen, at least on a recurring basis:

Col Flagg (2-3 times a year, any more would be too overbearing)

Captain Pak (maybe a third of the time)

From what I understand, the reason he had to drop out of the role is due to a leg injury that prevented him from moving around the cockpit set.

    That was the official story.

The rumor was Mr Mimic could not master a convincing Texas accent.

Happy Days: In the pilot episode, which was shown as an episode of Love, American Style, the father was played by Harold Gould. However, in the regular series Tom Bosley took over the role as the Father. Per Wikipedia, Susan Heher played Joanie in the pilot and Erin Moran played her in the series.

Tabitha: Liberty Williams played Tabitha in the original pilot, but Lisa Hartman took over the role in the regular series.

Two actors were replaced when the pilot of Game of Thrones was scrapped and reshot — Jennifer Ehle (of Pride & Prejudice fame) had originally played Catelyn Stark, and Daenerys was originally played by Tamzin Merchant (who happened to be in the Keira Knightley P&P).

Both Williams and Gould belong to the Actors Who Were Replaced Club. She also was Rhodas sister Debbie on an episode of The MTM Show but by the time Rhoda became its own series, there was no longer a Debbie but a Brenda played by Julie Kavner. Coincidentally, on the same series, Gould was Rhodas dad and he played Ann Maries dad in the pilot for That Girl.

Sada Thompson was originally cast as Irene Lorenzo on All in the Family but was replaced by Betty Garrett after shooting one episode.

Sal Barone played DJ Conner in the Roseanne pilot and was replaced by Michael Fishman.

Alfred Lutter reprised his movie role of Tommy Hyatt in the Alice pilot and was replaced by Phillip McKeon.
