Bronzed CD

I notice that my U2 October old CD have a bronzed tone on the surface.
Is it rot sign?

 

It is. The disc is almost certainly 'made in UK by PDO'. Many of these, manufactured in the late 80s - mid 90s do this. It doesn't affect the music at first, but eventually it does. As October is a short album, it might not affect the music on your disc yet. It tends to go from the outside, where the final tracks are on CDs, inwards.

 

I've got a totally bronze 'Non Stop Erotic Cabaret' CD I'm expecting to have to replace sometime. Still plays but for how long?! Thanks PDO!

 

It must be a UK PDO pressing. They had that problem back in the early days of the CD.

 

For the OP - on the plus side, at least 'October' is pretty rubbish. And I'm a U2 fan.

I’ve got a handful of PDO discs from that time with bronzed fronts but perfect backs and they all play just fine, have for years.

 

There was a time back when the bronzing issue first arose that the record company sent out a replacement disc gratis. Seem to recall that a number of my U2 discs were replaced and yes all pressed at PDO.

 

Is the bronzing hue evenly distributed over the surface or is it spotty and does it get darker towards the edge of the disc?
In the first case you might be in luck because PDO UK also produced 'tinted' discs which are unaffected by rot.

 

The bronzing is usually on the non-read side because there is only a thin coat of lacquer on that side.

Best way to check if it's still ok is by ripping the disc with EAC and checking the log file. If the later tracks rip more slowly than the first tracks that's a hint that the disc could be developing problems.

 

It's hard to say, I've had ones that haven't played the last few songs on long CDs, but plenty of others that look bad but play well. October is cheap enough to replace though. I haven't got any, but I've read good things about the currently available remastered U2 CDs. They could sound better.

All my UK CD-V's have this tint as well with no problems.

 

I have about three bronzed discs and they still play perfectly but I think I'd better back them up.

I don't think pinholes are a problem. I have a 30 year old CD which has a lot of pinholes which I spotted soon after buying it back in 1987. It's still delivering perfect sound . Probably forever.
