Silly question, I know — but when you guys rip live Dead CDs/picks/box sets to your computers do you sort/organise by say Disc 1, 2 and 3 for a 3CD set as if you were listening to the CDs, or do you do your own thing and sort the shows by Set 1, Set 2/3, Encore? For example, the Vancouver 22/06/73 show — all of Disc 1 and the first 5 songs on Disc 2 are the 1st Set, the remainder is the 2nd Set, then the last song is the Encore. What do you find easier for navigating between songs/shows? Just curious.
There’s one listed on amazon for $975. Cheap to find out. [/QUOTE] I was actually referring to 77 being better than 72. Not this specific release. For me no shows post hiatus are better than anything previous.
Depends. Generally I keep to the listing on the box. However, if anything is out of order, bonus cuts, etc., I re-order it in the digital realm. For the Road Trips compilation releases I group everything by date and then I put the pieces of the show in order they were played, when applicable. It's pretty OCD actually.
I generally leave the official releases as is (unless major reordering and splicing of missing tracks is needed). Archive downloads get listed by set, not by cd. I’m still hoping for the day when official releases are tracked by set without cd length fades and sometimes repeats of the last few seconds of the prior disc.
I prefer things in historical order. If its a Daves bonus disc with 2/3 of another show, I patch in the missing songs from an unofficial source But if it's only 2 or 3 bonus cuts i usually just put them aside.
1972-09-27 Great Morning Dew opener, very good Bird Song, excellent Brokedown Palace and PiTB; GSET not as great as the previous (or, if I may cheat, the next); Dark Star>Cumberland is hot. There seems to be a little skip from DS to Cumberland where maybe it starts up again when the track changes? (listening to Dick 11) Attics is killer though of course the vocals are a little off
It’s no longer a disc when I rip it so I use the “disc” as set one or two, sometimes three and don’t do anything special with encores. I also will number sequentially in the order they are performed for that show. So if a show has 32 songs than it’s 1 of 32, 2 of 32, 3 of 32...etc.
Me too, though it’s frustrating as hell when the bonus disc/tracks are wildly out of order and don’t sync properly when patching in other songs.
Estimated Prophet will always be top 3 fave GD songs for me. This version from 5/22/77 is blistering at the seems with greatness.
One of the very best Estimated jams is from the July '78 box. It's either from July 3 or 5. It's smoking hot and long!
Yeah, I just rip the CDs in disc order 1, 2 and 3 etc., not by set list — part of me wants to redo my iTunes though, but I don't think I can be bothered!
I don’t know if this was ever posted, a conversation between Rolling Stone and Joe Smith. It was originally published in 2012. That Time Joe Smith Sent the Grateful Dead a Letter Complaining About Their Work Ethic
There's nothing difficult about this - it all fits like a glove My favorite He's Gone ever is from this show. And 1972-09-28 contains my favorite Brokedown Palace ever.
I don't know if someone mentioned it already in the thread, but Joe Smith has just passed away, which is why Rolling Stone reposted that. Here's an obit in Variety, containing a photo of Joe with the Dead (fall '71 lineup with Keith and Pigpen, minus Bill) holding gold records for Skull.
