Mike Bruce wrote most of Alice Coopers songs with the band. Alice would tweak a word or two.

... along similar lines - Tom Marshall and Phish, Bernie Taupin with Elton John, and Peter Brown with Cream/Jack Bruce.

From 1973-77, It was a split between him & May. Deacon & Taylor were typically given one song each. For 1978's Jazz album, John & Roger got two songs.

James Dean Bradfield - Manic Street Preachers. Lyrics written by Richey Edwards and Nicky Wire, then by Wire. He wrote "Ocean Spray" on "Know Your Enemy" but didn't consistently contribute lyrics until Rewind The Film.

I thought Bruce wrote the music and Alice the lyrics.

I used to think the one who sang it, wrote it.
I'm going to guess Freddie wrote "Death on Two Legs".. My favorite song, with some great, biting lyrics.

Even though Gabriel during his tenure wrote a lot of lyrics, he still sang lyrics written by Banks (and by Anthony Philips early on)
I'm not sure if Rutherford ever wrote lyrics before Peter Gabriel left.

How do you all feel about those who write for the singer, but not being in the band?

I kinda see it as they are in the band, but their role doesn't require them to perform. For example, it always seemed normal and natural to me to see Bernie Taupin depicted on Elton's album artwork along with the players.

Across the first seven King Crimson albums, precisely one song features lyrics written by the singer.
