Exactly! There is going to be something good in every genre with a director who changed it up and created a new hybrid. Like how Edgar Wright created the RomZomCom with Shaun of the Dead

I'll go along with zombies, too. Also I'd add animated movies, like Toy Story, etc. Since I don't have kids, I never had to watch these, or learn to put up with them.

Reading this thread, I realize I'm so lucky that my wife and I both have very wide-ranging tastes. For instance I'm not into sports, but I love many sports movies The Natural (even though I find baseball about as exciting as watching grass grow), North Dallas Forty (see what I said about baseball), Laagan (even though cricket is even slower and more baffling than baseball).... if you told me that I'd absolutely love a movie called The Wrestler I would have been very dubious.

Superheroes and CGI action films are pretty much the only full categories I can rule out. I guess extreme gory horror is another though I love classic and campy horror films as well as the Romero zombie films.

As for musicals, for me, it's a matter of simply not liking the music in those old-fashioned adaptations of Broadway shows. So I grew up not really liking these films but grew to appreciate The Sound of Music, even though I would never play the soundtrack album.

Other than that, I can get into a musical if I actually like the music. Dreamgirls is a good example. But I will pass on anything associated with Andrew Lloyd Weber or schmaltzy Broadway showtunes.

  14. I think the only genre I avoid is "Torture Porn." Kind of a made up genre but still.
I have seen a few and no longer desire to see any of that style ever again.

Seriously? The Toy Story films are for adults and can also be enjoyed by kids. Toy Story 2 is the best film about an existential crisis ever made. In it, Woody is faced with a choice between eternal life without love and mortality while being loved, and presents this choice in a way far deeper and more meaningfully than any philosopher ever managed.

Okay, that I can agree with. If someone can make a case for why I should see something like Saw or Hostel I'd entertainment it.

  18. Hostel always gets singled out as one of the ultimate "Torture Porn" atrocities, but I wouldn't tar it with that brush. The concept is more disturbing than anything you see on the screen and it doesn't play as a thrillride for sadists (although that is sort of the concept of the movie...).

Everything you said sounded like some variation of "it's not as bad as you think." I'm curious if you can give me a positive reason why I should see it.

When the entire main cast of a comedy is a race other than my own. The problem is that different races usually have different cultures. What is funny to one culture flies right over the hairspray of another.

    Also
    Horror
R rated comedies (too much bathroom humor)

My wife and I love chick flicks, but with a caveat. They have to be at least close to our own generation. We're both now 65. We own all the Meg Ryan romantic comedies, e.g. Sleepless in Seattle, but something changed a while back. Our generation can no longer relate to the romantic comedies of the last ten or 20 years, with a few exceptions. The culture just moves on.

I used to love sci-fi, but it too has changed. Frankly, the older I get, the more important the story is, and the less important the special affects are.

I love Pulp Fiction and Get Shorty...
