Heh, didn't realize that there are so many musical haters here. I agree though. They are all goofy and I can't take them seriously.

But other than that, I could probably agree that there are good examples in just about all genres. Ignoring the torture genre, which is a fine choice if you are a psychopath of some sort.

Yes, I'm painting with a broad brush, but one or two genres can probably be safely written off.

Superhero movies I do dislike generally. Probably because there are way too many of them. I think these movies need to have some basis in reality and they should also have a dark tone to them. So I can probably dig stuff like some of the Batman and Punisher movies.

It's also hard to watch an animated movie. Toy Story was mentioned. Never saw it. Looking at screenshots, it's hard to think this is not a kid's movie. I think a lot of us have just been conditioned to associated cartoons and kids. Might have a powerful message, but why not just make a regular movie out of it and not have the distraction of it being a cartoon? I guess this is a "me" problem, but I think making it a cartoon is a choice of the creators and it's done for some reason. Certainly not for storyline or a philosophical message. Those things to me are undermined by the choice of making it a cartoon.

I think he's gotten a lot of praise for his dramatic work in Uncut Gems, which just came out this year. Have not seen it yet though.

I’ve never seen it in its entirety. What I haven seen I wasn’t too impressed. I guess if I was forced to name a musical I could tolerate it would be “Hair”.

    Ha! I hated hair. ;)
"Hairspray" I find tolerable due to the Corney Collins humor - and John Travolta and Christopher Walken were a crack up.

The lyrics to a lot of the songs are absolutely awesome, as is the music itself. It's quite a show.

    OK, I like Hairspray. :)

    And Grease, of course.

OK, so I like musical COMEDIES. :D

I hear you, but "Remains Of The Day" and "Howard's End" are brilliant.

I can't stand horror movies, especially the witless slice-and-dice ones. Or there's-a-bunch-of-sorority-girls-in-a-cabin-in-the-woods genre. Don't mind suspense (the original The Wicker Man, with Christopher Lee, is one of my favorites). Don't like most action flicks.

Unfortunately, the economics of the movie industry make it necessary to appeal to the average moviegoer, who is young and (let's face it) not too discriminating. So car crashes, superheroes, fights rule the day...for a movie to be made these days appealing to thinking adults is the exception rather than the rule.

I'll go along with the "torture porn" films being ruled out. Never want to see any of those again.

In every other film genre I can find something to enjoy. I'm not typically big on musicals [especially modern ones], but I love Little Shop of Horrors and Fred Astaire's films. "Chick flicks" usually annoy the crap out of me, but I'm pretty sure there's one or two I enjoy. (Does Mean Girls technically fall under that banner?)

There are so many slasher/horror flicks floating around from the last 15 years, and they seem to be increasing....most are incredibly cheesy with low production values that keep recycling the same ole gimmicks. I gave up on the Horror genre unless I notice one with exceptional ratings.

My wife and I have noticed this. We've found some truly wonderful movies on Netflix and Amazon prime but we rarely suggest them to friends. For us it is now all about the story and characters

"Still mine" is a minor treasure and one we recently saw, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, is a superb film that will hit you hard.

One of my all time favorites is "The Time Traveller's Wife". The second time I saw it, I was in tears pretty much from beginning to end because I knew what was coming next.

For light holiday entertainment, Klaus was very enjoyable animated film for my wife and me. We thought it would be kid stuff but it's not really. It's all in English but is actually a spanish movie. We did not know that when we watched it, but it explains the "not quite typical" look of the very artsy world it presents.

I really can not say that there is any genre I hate, but I can say that I am difficult to please when it comes to films in general.

While I’ve seen a few superhero movies I like, in recent years I’ve avoided that genre.

I agree. I enjoy Bollywood films, but tend to avoid their comedies - with a few exceptions, gay characters tend to be simpering nellies. Also, there is a type I call the "Bollywood Brat" who tortures and demeans the male lead... until he marries her.

"Hook up culture" is a bit baffling. I saw a film not long ago called No Strings Attached with Natalie Portman) and Ashton Kutcher playing old friends who decide to start having the title relationship, determined to not fall in love with each other. It was enjoyable enough, but as someone who's been in a relationship for coming on 39 years, I couldn't grasp what the problem was.

Here's two very attractive people who been lifelong friends, obviously enjoy each other's company, and are apparently having mind-blowing sex.

But they can't commit. The whole 3rd act was baffling.

It's a story that can only be told about toys and only in animated form. The toys are in fact adults, created for the purpose of being played with. This is their raison d'être. But they're faced with the knowledge that they're going to be eventually discarded. The subtext of the film is about how children are going to eventually leave to start their own lives.

This sorry is about one of the toys, Jessie, telling Woody about being forgotten by Emily, her former owner:

You might enjoy the film Cabin in the Woods, which upends the entire genre.

Well, it's clever enough and I guess you're right that it must be told in animated form. I'll try to watch it and keep an open mind.

I do enjoy South Park on occasion. Family Guy too. Though these are so obviously adult shows and maybe that's why I don't think of some kid's show when I watch them. Still, not really into them that much.

I do appreciate Bugs Bunny and Road Runner and all of those. They have a timeless quality to them.

The Simpson's I just don't get. Great, lots of references to things in pop culture. So what? That doesn't make it funny or clever. There is the odd laugh for me, but it seems to be big on the referential stuff that just doesn't impress me at all.

I hated the trend that was started with Blair Witch Project and then all the copy-cat movies that followed. Shaky Camera via first person perspectives, Fake Reality-type scripts, Jumps without being scary, etc. Then all those reality shows on cable followed the same type of stuff, such as Ghost Hunters, etc.

I can't stand any of them. Can't believe I wasted my money on some of them too because of the hype they were given when released.

I love horror, but the large marjority of it is utter garbage - even the genre's biggest fans have to admit that. I think even these crap-tacular films end up making money, especially in foreign markets and on streaming video, so they keep cranking them out.

Of the thousands and thousands of horror films available, if I were trying to convert a horror-hater, I can only think of maybe 20 or 30 really good ones I'd recommend.
