What is your favorite "solo" album of all time?

I don't think people appreciate it enough because it's got a guy in make-up on the cover...but it's a brilliant album.

Yes, it has always been my favorite "comfort album", for lack of a better term. The songs have a quality that really hits home, and the diversity of the material, while always remaining tuneful, weaves so well together. As a lover of everything from power pop to easy listening, this is an album that has always endured for me.

 

In theory most of the Don Henley solo albums would count as the Eagles never officially broke up. At least that was the dialog in the Hell Freezes Over concert.

 

According to the criteria here, probably this one.
At least the one I've listened to the most.

 

Soooo traditionally solo artists aren't allowed on here, like Bowie?

Black Sabbath was also still active when Ozzy Osbourne's Diary of a Madman was released. Just not with him. I'll go with that, as I'm seeing some Peter Gabriel posts and the same thing would apply with Genesis. (First 3 PG albums are brilliant as well.)

Edit: Okay, I re-read some of the posts and I'll pick something else. I'll throw in Steve Hackett Please Don't Touch in the ring.

 

If you haven't heard it, then how in the heck can it be your favorite (as per the thread title)??

Anyway, if you can consider Hall & Oates to be a "group", then I'd have to go with Daryl's solo album Sacred Songs as my choice. Just a fantastic record, and quite a departure from the usual H&O sound.

is my favorite solo album which meets the requirements of this thread - by far!

I really wish the Stones would have rocked that hard in that decade!!!

It's such a shame so very few people are reading the initial post, and are just contributing 'my favourite album by someone who used to be in a band I liked'. As I said in my post above, I think there is often something special about albums made by a current bandmember. Why were the songs not recorded by the band? Is this a gambit for a solo career? What did the rest of the band think about the album?

After seeing Steve Hackett play over the weekend, I have been reading up on his decision to go solo all those years ago. His first album Voyage of the Acolyte is a great album, and meets the rules of this discussion.

Please Don't Touch is also a great album, but because he had left the band when he recorded it, it does not qualify.

my favourite from the rules is Eddie Hazel - Games, Dames & Guitar Thangs as he was still in Funkadelic. Everything else I have is a solo record.

 

My vote is for Empty Glass by Pete Townshend. It is a great album.

I also note that many have listed Ace Frehley's first solo album. I love that album. It is my favorite Kiss related album. I would also say it was the biggest surprise of a solo album. Ace had only sang one song on a Kiss album before it was released.

I see the same thing all the time as well. It's at the point where I often hesitate or pass on starting new thread ideas, just because I know that most will either A) never even read it, or B) if they do read it, they often just try to re-interpret or "correct" the post criteria for you that you laid out.

Not that it matters. I understand that the nature of a forum is to "post at your own whim" , but it's still too bad when often intriguing thread ideas are started yet most are more eager to simply be the first to post, rather than actually respect or contribute to what the thread proposed.

That said, I admonish myself as well, for I have done this before. By honest accident mind you. That is, I always read the initial post. I just have honestly mis-interpreted some on ocassion.

 

For me, it has to be Pacific Ocean Blue. But before that?

Good call here too.
To me, together with Ian MacKaye and Lou Barlow, Pollard is the greatest composer in American pop/alternative music.

 

Hard to argue with that.
