Recently I have been looking into Elvis Presley's movies on DVD. I am starting from ground zero -- I currently have nothing.

One of the ones I am most interested in seeing (again) is "Loving You" and I was dismayed to find that it seems to be the hardest one to get, long out of print and expensive due to rights issues.

I did find this listing on Amazon. Just from poking around on the internet, the cover design looks similar to an Australian release of the movie. Does anyone here have this? Before I pull the trigger I want to know first of all, if it will even play on an American player. Also, is this even a legit issue? Any help would be appreciated!

  2. There's some worisome reviews in that listing saying it won't play in USA players and that it's a boot. I wish I could say more but I don't have that particular disc (although I'm lucky enough to have the original USA DVD).

On a side note, this was set for a Blu-ray release but got cancelled, most likely due to rights issues. A big loss as I can only imagine how a nice transfer of this film would look. It's one of my favorite Elvis films too, with a great soundtrack IMO.

I saw those reviews too, but they seem to pre-date the listed release date (August 16, 2019). I also read about the canceled Twilight Time release. Bummer.

I remember seeing a movie on TV not long after Elvis died, with a scene where he gets into a bar fight. He knocks his adversary against a jukebox and the jukebox starts playing. Is that this movie?

This is a great thread - I too have been extremely frustrated with the inability to obtain Loving You on DVD. I have an original VHS somewhere, I am thinking of having it transferred.

Loving You is my favorite Elvis Presley movie. It's a time capsule into
the rockabilly 1950s, by way of Hollywood via Nashville. Beautiful film,
carefully made, exquisitely shot, loaded with classic imagery, and sports a
heartfelt performance by Elvis. I didn't realize it had gone out of print. It's
worth spending a few extra $ on, I think.

I recommend these films as Elvis's best work in movies, and these specific
editions as the best ones available at the present time:

    1956 Love Me Tender

    1957 Jailhouse Rock

    1957 Loving You

    1958 King Creole

1960 Flaming Star -- Twilight Time oop blu-ray -- look for it on ebay

1962 Follow That Dream -- Twilight Time oop blu-ray -- look for it on ebay

    1964 Viva Las Vegas

1971 That's the Way It Is
    https://www.amazon.com/Elvis-Thats-Way-Special-Blu-ray/dp/B00JVFZR1M/

1971 That's the Way It is -- deluxe edition box-set with concert CD's
look for it at Elvisshop, or Graceland, or ebay

    1972 Elvis On Tour
    https://www.amazon.com/Elvis-Tour-Blu-ray-Pierre-Adidge/dp/B003HKN51Q/

    1981 This Is Elvis documentary
    https://www.amazon.com/This-Elvis-Two-Disc-Special-Donner/dp/B000QUUD5Q/

I also recommend a 1980s TV series simply called Elvis starring Michael St. Gerard.
It didn't last a season, but it was superbly produced biographical drama that recreated
Memphis in 1954 and 1955. Memorable. No video release but the episodes used to be
on youtube in fair quality. There's been other Elvis bios but none of them measure
up to the one starring Michael St. Gerard.

There's also a few TV documentaries. More on that later.

I've heard this has been licensed from Universal (who now owns the title) and it was being restored from the VistaVision OCN. I know the OCN has some fade (on 5248 stock) but I heard about this late last year and haven't seen a thing---so hope to see a BD released on this at some point. I just hope it doesn't became "plastic city" with the grain management.....

I did catch Loving You in 35mm dye Transfer at the Egyptian Hollywood about 15 years ago--it was the NBC air print which was cropped some on the sides, and there was a some footage made up from an Eastman print that was turning---however, the Technicolor just leaped off the screen at you on this print---Teddy Bear scene was simply amazing on the big screen from a color standpoint. Sadly, this print died about 7 years ago from vinegar syndrome, but it was fantastic to see in 35mm. I've only seen one 16mm print in my 30 years of collecting film, and I kick myself for not bidding higher on it 12+ years ago----

I found a near mint copy of an original Loving You DVD (as pictured in Richard--W's post) on ebay for for $25 over a couple weeks ago. Sometimes items can pop up at a fair price.
Very good movie. King Creole's my favorite Elvis movie; this would be my second favorite.
They'll never be released on Blu-ray it looks like, unfortunately. Twilight Time was looking to release Loving You earlier this year but the cost for the music was too high.

Okay, I took a chance for a few bucks and figure if a better version comes along I can upgrade.

It is a DVD-R. In fact, the menu looks the same as the menus generated by my Panasonic. It plays okay. Something about the pitch suggests to me it might be sourced from a PAL transfer?
