    No, Squealy, you are mistaken.
The limitations you cite are actually virtues.
No one is suggesting an actor stand in front of the camera
    and read the book aloud.
This is why they call it "adaptation."

You can say that again. They're a perfect marriage to the producers
but the mentality of their writing is like cement.

I'd like to see this game. Can it still be set up and will it function?

Some of the recasting done in 2006 hasn't served the series well. M for example.
Changing M to a female was a good idea and the right idea but they played her
character wrong. They blew it. Changing M again to a shirt-sleeve blue-collar
man of action in the office doesn't work either. I don't think we need to go into
the lives of the office help; they're meant to be a contrast, not more of the same.
They're there to give 007 a grounding, a home to return to. They should never
    be the story itself.

If they reboot for the next Bond film I would hope they put the chaotic office
back in order. M should be a contrast to 007. Keep Rory Kinnear as Bill Tanner.
Bring back Miss Moneypenny as Miss Monepenny not as Eve with the sniper
rifle. Restart the storyline; no more Blofeld, none of the circumstances and
events of the Daniel Clueless era to weigh down the new films with baggage.

Plenty of period films are action films just as exciting as contemporary films.
Barbara Broccoli has stated they'll never do a period film. So she may share
the misconception that period films have no action. Of course period films
    have action. All the time.

You know they cast Judi Dench as M for Goldeneye right? 1995 not 2006.

Yes, I know that, but her character did not become an femme Nazi
until Casino Royale. She is the true villain of the Bond franchise.

Copies of "Everything or nothing" on Playstation 2 can be found used online, for a few dollars.

All you need is a copy of the game and of course a working Playstation 2 console. If you don't have a CRT TV anymore, there are component cables for the PS2..

A review and several screenshots are available here

    Thanks for that.

I see a lot of Bond videogames available cheap. I'm interested.
The consoles can be had for about $70. There's a Playstation 4
now, I wonder if that will play the Playstation 2.
    What's the route to go?

The PS4 is not backwards compatible with PS3, PS2, or PS1 titles. Only the PS2 is backwards compatible with PS1 titles. One of the PS3's is backwards compatible with some PS1 titles, but not all.

I have a PS3 & kept my PS2 as well because of that.

These component cables to adapt the game into a hi-def
screen -- is there quality loss? image or audio loss? I can
put a CRT back in the house but it's a pain and there's
    no room for it.

No, I’m not suggesting they read the book out loud. But I assume that if people want to see filmed versions of the books, they want the books adapted faithfully. And I just don’t think the stories as found in the books would cut it for contemporary audiences, at least not as big budget movies.

The early Bond movies were exaggerated adaptations of the books, and they begat forty years of Bond movies that are over the top, large scale adventures, to greater or lesser degrees. And that’s what people are used to. Whether you’d personally like it better or not, straight adaptations of Ian Fleming wouldn’t be as successful.

I never said I wanted straight adaptations.
I want smarter adaptations, but not straight adaptations.
The operative word here being "adaptations" or does that word only
    have meaning you say it?
Some of the early films improved on the novels in interesting ways.
    Dr. No especially.

Audiences today expect films to be theme-park thrill-rides. This is
creates problems for dramatists because it is not what their art
and craft is about. Action is obviously necessary but no, the Bond
films don't have to be theme-park thrill rides every minute.

Also, the 20GB, 60GB NTSC "launch" PS3 models were able to play PS2 games via hardware-based compatibility. The80GB NTSC PS3 was able to play PS2 games, but with software based compatibility.

Since the audio of most consumer TVs is weak, you can hook the RGB video cables to your TV, and can use the digital optical output of the PS2 to feed your A/V surround receiver. "Everything or nothing" is THX - Dolby Surround Pro Logic II encoded, so no quality loss. If you just want stereo, it sounds great anyway. Hook the audio cables to your amp, or the digital if your stereo amp has a digital input .

As for the image, remember to set the correct video out

There are component to HDMI converters if your TV has not component, but this is similar to what I see with component and a 720p screen.

    Revising my response.
I never said I wanted straight adaptations.
I want straight-forward storytelling free of political agendas.
Being straight-forward doesn't mean being straight or literal.
I want smarter adaptations, but not straight adaptations.

The operative word here being "adaptations" or does that word only
have meaning when you say it?
Being faithful doesn't mean a lack of action.
Some of the early films improved on the novels in interesting ways.

creates problems for dramatists because it is not what their art

    and
I assume that what they are asking for is movies that closely follow the books.

Audiences today expect to be entertained for about 2 hours.

    They always did.
Except that Daniel Clueless apologists expect Bond's M.other to follow him
around the globe and scold him for two hours. Lecture him on how to be a
better man and kinder gentler spy. That's their idea of being entertained.
If James Bond put on her dress they'd be fine with that, too.

What is it about Bond as a cultural thing that elicits such intemperate opinions?

I thought the trailer was kind of Meh, which is a bad sign for a Bond film. The one motorcycle stunt made me go Woah! but that was about it. I know you shouldn't rush to judgement but if the whole point of the trailer was to whet my appetite, well it didn't....

But these days we just assume stunt shots like that are all CGI or green screen or some other tech wizardry. Even in a Bond film where the assumption is that they try to do as much as possible in-camera.

    Cliche ridden, generic..deja vu.
Bond should be at least more glamorous sophisticated than your general run Bourne wannabes.
