I put off watching this for years because I thought it looked like it could just be a cheap slasher flick . Was I ever wrong! Good movie with a terrific performance by Micheal Rooker.

I like dark movies too, but they're not the only movies I watch. It's easy to get lost in darkness if you're not careful. I saw a documentary about horror movies that were cursed, causing bad things to happen to the cast and producers. Shows like Poltergeist, The Omen, The Amityville Horror and The Exorcist. It scared the hell outta me, especially since I watched it late at night.

Joker. Def worth your time. I just watched it last night. It's a bold interpretation of tragedy.

I give credit where it's due and this is a really well done and well-acted movie. I also never want to see it again.

If you can find The Strangeness, Humongous, The Keep and Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama on VHS then it may be the darkest movie (not) watching experiences of your life.

For truly dark themed, nihilistic films I heartily recommend classic film noir. No, not the over recommended Bogart movies that play more like comedies with a deadpan auctioneer in the Detective role, I'm talking about Scarlet Street, Detour, The Red House, Gun Crazy, Too Late for Tears, Leave Her to Heaven, The Strange Love of Martha Ivers, The Prowler, No Man of Her Own, The Naked Kiss and Hollow Triumph.

Some more, now that I've spent my last couple of months mostly with movies:

To Live And Die In L.A.
    The Marriage of Maria Braun
Down In The Valley (sadly, this wasn't a good movie. Actually, it sucks. In fact, don't ever watch this.)
    Mean Streets
    Sunset Boulevard
    Barton Fink
The Osterman Weekend (which, sadly, sucks as well)
    Nightcrawler
Hands Over The City (if you like very 'life-like' movies, this is a must-watch! Brilliant.)

I swear Pitt plays rednecks better than anyone - especially really trashy, violent ones. I'm convinced he relies on his upbringing in Missouri to inform these characters. Even in "Snatch" it's basically another one of these characters, just set in a different culture.

...And not to mention Juliette Lewis role echoing and complementing other damaged characters of hers.

Yes, it's a type of role she excels at - no idea what she draws on to pull this "damage" from, but at one time, she was cast in a lot of roles like this. What makes her character in "Kalifornia" even more pitiful is how naive, childlike, and (honestly) dumb her character is.
