Language question: Why has "vinyls" become a word?

    The word "vinyl" is being used as a noun when people are using it to describe the format,
    so sorry, but your point that it is also a material is not really relevant.

    It's also a cultural difference thing. Here in France we've always been using the word "vinyls" for records, Lps, even in the 70s, 80s... etc... when CD wasn't even there.
