The Yesterday film, yes or no?

No, the two people he met may have also been unconscious at the same instant Jack was. The movie didn't get into it because this is fantasy, not science fiction. Presumably they went through the same thing he did, where they woke up and all of their Beatles records were gone and nobody had ever heard of them, only Jack had the ability to sing and play guitar so he could bring this music to the world in which he found himself.

 

Again, fantasy (genre should not be an excuse for weak plotting) or not, this was a poorly set up premise. I love the premise by the way, but not the execution. Clearly we’re not going to sway each other’s position so I’ll leave it here.

 

Suppose the question is, would the film be more enjoyable it explicitly said how the Beatles disappeared from that world, or never happened?

Andy Summers wrote a book about his career with the Police, and he titled it One Train Later - which is how he wound up meeting Sting. It's been years since I read it but, if he had or hadn't taken one train later they never would have met. There's a million ways John and Paul would never have met, and potentially a million universes in which there's no Beatles.

One of my favorite films is Groundhog Day, and the original script had Bill Murray's character being cursed by girl he'd dumped. The director cut that out of the script and made it a better film as far as I'm concerned. As I said before Yesterday was about giving us the opportunity to see people discovering these songs for the first time, and that to me is the most magical part.

 

Actually, those two other people were one my favorite parts of the film. The way they gradually popped
up in various scenes, and the expressions on their faces, showed that they realized there was ONE other
person who remembered. Especially, when he went to Strawberry Fields and Eleanor Rigby's grave,
how she was watching him was fascinating. And, until their final scene with him, (with the Yellow Submarine)
you didn't know if they were going to expose him. Great scene. Plus you see them dancing together
on the rooftop while he's doing "Ob La Di.. " with the kids.

 

While the film is a bit hard to believe and there's obvious flaws within what could have existed and not existed without the fabs, it made me realize that those songs are extremely important to our modern culture. It made me appreciate the ones that I had been a little tired of (The Long & Winding Road, Let It Be, Hey Jude, etc.). What would a world be like without those songs? It's almost like some higher power gave us the fabs so those who can relate can have that music in common. Overall, I liked it even if it is a bit cheesy at times. It's just entertainment.

 

Watched it last night. I found it charming.

 

As far as the acting:
The only thing that really got me was, when the girl asked if he had written those songs for her, and his silence answered her question. She looked genuinely sad and hurt.

 

Finally watched this last night. Went in with a little trepidation but ended up liking it quite a bit. Kept wondering what else didn't exist anymore.

Normally not a rom-com fan at all, but finally got around to watching it last night (probably will be getting to a lot of movies now I'd been waiting on given the current state of the world), and I found it charming, enjoyable and quite poignant in places - particularly the Lennon meeting. Music was handled really well (the desperation with which "Help" was performed was really appropo), the two leads were great, and it even made me end up liking Ed Sheeran a bit. Not only that, but I think overall it deepened my appreciation for the cultural impact of the Beatles' music and how it has really changed people's lives - and will continue to...

 

I haven't seen it but I would probably watch it on cable tv during a lockdown if I had nothing better to do. There is a time for every purpose under the heavens.

 

I'm fine with the dude in the film being clueless in the movie. I am not fine with the lead actress patiently waiting for the lead dude to come to his senses for years when anyone who looks like she has has had numerous hot dudes hitting on her on a daily basis. You may have not gotten laid by the hot porn star, but you can bet she was laying someone else at the time. And that is my point. That actress can't pull off the girl next door thing, and that is a compliment.

And I have seen too many rom coms. Not sure how my simple statement got quoted twice. No one else cringed that he was purposely having an intimate moment with his love into a microphone where the whole world was listening? Gag. One of the most awkward "climactic airport moments" I have ever seen in a rom com.

Other parts of the films were okay, liked the Lennon moment.

 

Watched this for the first time.
Glad I didn't run out to the cinema to watch it.
It wasn't awful, but it wasn't worth the hype.
Enjoyed it enough, but I wont be buying no DVD/Blu Ray for the collection.
It's great promotional work for The Beatles of course, but the movie didn't have a lot of 'guts' or 'substance' to it.
The 'songs' are the obvious highlight of the film.
It has a very obvious 'approval' tick from Sir Paul, right to the final credits where they play his/The Beatles original 'Hey Jude'.
I'm probably over analyzing....
Worth a watch, but wont be watching again in a hurry.

 

Wow, this is a very sobering article about the original writer of the Yesterday screenplay and how he got totally screwed over by the director and producer and prevented from getting full credit for the idea:

That's a cautionary tale of how some people in Hollywoo (or the UK in this case) are credit hogs who want all the attention for themselves. Note that the movie cost $26M but wound up making $153.7 million worldwide, but has still "not yet broken even," so the original writer has not received a penny in residuals. There's a lotta sad stories like this in the film business, particularly for relatively inexperienced writers without heavy-duty agents, and they wind up getting terribly taken advantage of.

Yeah, I've just set the tivo to record it, I can then ignore it whenever I want to.

 

I always thought they missed one line that would have explained so much -
Lennon has a pic of an old woman on his desk. He's asked who that is -
"that's me mum, passed away last year at age of 98" (or whatever Julia's math would have worked out to be age wise)

Which would mean Lennon's mom wasn't killed and he didn't turn to Paul as a partner

Would also have been great if he did some research and found Paul as a retired English teacher...

 

Oh is that actually in the film, or you saying it should be?

If the latter, you're probably right.

Well the film has been out for nearly two years.

Oh I know about the spoiler option. I would certainly have put it there. As to not very long, in today’s,world two years is a lifetime

 

I enjoyed the film (thought I would hate it) saw it when I flew to London. The bit at the end was poignant. If folks want a logical explanation (but still (n the sc9ence fiction/fantasy realm), the character woke up in a parallel dimension. It did make me sad that the author of the original script was so badly ripped off. If I were him, I woild go to the guild for arbitration, Sue or something to have the credits revised.,it’s part of his legacy and, really, the ego of Curtis-it isn’t as if he doesn’t have enough to his credit.
