Match #3 changed when Ken sweated out but got the DD in Game 1 ("Nullification"), including Alex pausing just a little bit extra before announcing that he was correct.

I'm not used to hearing the contestants banter with each other like this. It's pretty entertaining.

These have been quite good so far.

I checked on j-archive, and before Final Jeopardy in Game 4, the sum totals of 3 and 4 were (pardon me if I did the arithmetic wrong):
    James: 67114
    Ken: 65200

But for Final Jeopardy, Ken only wagered 3800, compared to James' 15300.

So basically if James got the answer correct (which he did), he won. If he got it wrong, he would have lost. Ken's answer essentially didn't matter, based on what the 2 players' bets were and their point difference.

I don't think the game is fixed.

In the six games played thus far, in the first round (Jeopardy Round): James had 3 DDs, Brad, 2; and Ken 1. In the second round (Double Jeopardy): Brad has 7, Ken 3, James 1.

Despite the fact that his team won, my recollection is that Brad Rutter, individually, was not very impressive in the 'All Star' tournament last year, and that he's playing at about the same skill level this time round.

My prediction is that Jennings wins tonight for the championship.

Jennings is much better than I gave him credit for. I thought Holzhauer's unorthodox style and fast buzzer skills would get him, but that hasn't been the case. That said, the amount of knowledge that Jennings and Holzhauer have is incredible. I mean, who knows about Rutter because he never even gets to talk ...

I usually LOATHE when contestants go out of their way to show they have "personality", but these 3 guys have earned the right to banter in between clues. For one, they're all pretty likable and come across as genuine (as opposed to some past contestants who are clearly trying way too hard), and since they're all great players, they're able to get to every clue in a round despite the banter. There's nothing more annoying than when clues go uncovered because a contestant (and even Alex is guilty of this) has to run their mouth showing off their "personality".

I think Jennings clearly adapted well to Holzhauers style. And Rutter knows too to work bottom up searching for DDs. While he’s been a step below the other two, him finding the DDs and keeping them from Holzhauer has definitely kept Holzhauer from hitting his stride. Holzhauer is struggling because he’s battling guys using his strategy AND are as smart as he is. I find it interesting Jennings said he prepped by focusing on Alex’s speaking cadence to help beep quicker.

anyway this has been a lot of fun. Smart guys, tough topics, and it’s been fun watching with my kids and wife moreso than probably the last few years. Hoping Holzhauer wins to stretch this out another night or two.

I agree on the normal shows. But two shows in an hour, 4-6 possible shows, all with the same three guys, I’m ok with it staying loose and getting banter.
Speaking of their sense of humor....

Oh definitely. The last 3 nights have been great. Smart contestants, fast paced, and I really like the friendly competition aspect of the tournament. All 3 of these guys respect each other, and although I'm sure they all want to win the whole thing, seem genuinely happy for the other contestants when they take a game and impressed when they make a ballsy wager on the Daily Doubles and answer correctly. It's good TV!

They do seem to respect the other contestants, and also they seem very happy about having some good competition. That makes it more fun.

Now I've always found Pat Sajak to have an amazing sense of humor and that he's very quick-witted. Some of his interactions with the contestants in off-the-cuff moments are quite amusing. I don't have any examples, but he impresses me.

As I am watching this match and observing the latitude they are allowing the contestants to speak, I can't help but think this is an audition for Alex's sad but inevitable replacement. Ken is looking pretty good, IMO...

She is cute, but how about Pat Sajak's daughter who is also named Maggie, who is filling in this week as the letter turner, as Vanna fills in for Pat.

(Note: Nice that they gave Vanna a chance to host, but she has zero personality as a host and after 39 years watching Pat, you'd think that she'd have a better concept of how things work behind the scenes and yet, every night she makes huge mistakes that honestly should have been edited out of the final program.)

Ken's skill with the buzzer is amazing. He said he studied Trebek's cadence, that's impressive.

James threw his game off last night when he missed that fairly obvious Daily Double question (garnet) and lost everything. Along with the points, he lost his mojo. Hope he's back in form the the next game.

And the New England Patriots are the most honest team in football. Rutter 7, Holzhauer 1 in the most important clue(s) on the board.

The number of times Rutter has hit the DD on the *first* question of Double Jeopardy is the issue. It’s a 1/15 shot. And I think of the 7, at least 3, if not 4 were the 1st clue of DJ. (Someone can correct me if I miscounted.)

Take the DD off the board in DJ, and you have severely damaged Holzhauer’s strategy and ability to win.

Agreed. His team won him that tournament.

Jennings will not win next Tuesday. (I knew what day you meant.)

Holzhauer has the demeanor of a casino gambler (which he is). You never know what he is really thinking. Coming across to me as a little too competitive here, a few too many smirks. I wish he was a little more complimentary of other people (especially the other two contestants), but maybe that's just not in his nature. I do like the fact that he has donated some of his winnings to charity.

Rutter said as much a couple nights ago, he seems to have either lost some reflex ability or his ability to recall (or both). I'd like to see him win a game or two to make this tournament go the distance, but I don't see that happening. (didn't know until this week he was from Pennsylvania -- I missed when he was on the show originally [2000 or thereabouts]) - I'm also from that area but I am at least 10 years older than Rutter).

I think Jennings is going to win this. From what I have observed he seems to be consistently first on the buzzer when he wants to ring in, and to my eyes, his knowledge base is very very broad. Of course, only one person can answer a question. It is hard for me to tell if Holzhauer tries to ring in on the same clues that Jennings is ringing in on (to be honest, I haven't been looking at Holzhauer to gauge his reactions, unless he throws his hands up in frustration, which I have seen him do a few times).

I think Jennings wins this, eventually. In any event I don't see this going beyond Game 5, whenever that is (it'll be a 3-2-0 victory for either Holzhauer or Jennings), unless Rutter gets his act together.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS AFTER READING THE REST OF THE THREAD:

I do not believe there is any fixing. There were safeguards put in after the quiz show scandals of 60 years ago to prevent stuff like that. If there were any fixing, Jeopardy! would be in a heap of legal trouble. IMO, Rutter is just guessing right on the locations of the DDs, finding them early in the rounds.

Jenning's comment about Alex's speaking cadence makes me wonder -- is listening the only way the contestants get the clues (there is no video board with the text?)? I have noticed, when I have tried doing this (listening only) on purpose, that I get far fewer correct answers. The quickness of the buzzer ring-ins, however, leads me to believe that the contestants are indeed reading the clues, as Alex is saying them. So Jenning's "cadence" comment puzzles me.

An additional comment since I can no longer edit my last post.

I have seen DDs as far up as the second row on the board (let's throw out the first row for the purposes of this comment -- I (maybe) have seen that once in all the years I've been watching the show). That would make the odds of getting a DD, on the first guess of a round, 1/24 in the Jeopardy round and 2/24 (or 1/12) in the Double Jeopardy round.

Using the same rules as the previous paragraph, the odds of getting DDs on the first two guesses of the Double Jeopardy round is (2/24)*(1/23) = 2/552 or 1/276.

If the DDs are restricted to the last three rows (the case in most games, and probably what the contestants are banking on) - the odds become:
1/18 for DD on first guess of Jeopardy round
1/9 for DD on first guess of Double Jeopardy round
(2/18)*(1/17) = 2/306 or 1/153 for DDs on first two guesses of Double Jeopardy round

I've been enjoying watching him seethe in frustration (instead of smiling and applauding his opponent, as most do) when anyone else gets an extra-value clue like the Daily Double.

  24. The buzzers unlock when Alex finishes reading the question. If you are familiar with his cadence it probably buys you a few milliseconds over your opponents.

I wonder about this. Do the buzzers unlock immediately after he finishes reading? 100 milliseconds (or other set amount) after? Even if you know Alex's cadence, how do you practice buzzing in at home (i.e. what tells you if you were too early, too late, etc)? It seems like something that you can only experience on the show.
