Okay - this is merely a simple discussion game I have come up with to engage fellow music connoisseurs.
First off: this is not a Vs. thread. This is ENTIRELY a subjective excercise, designed for discussion and opinions. Fun to play with music lovers!

Favorite album: self-explanatory. No defending necessary - you like it the most! Totally subjective.

Best album: the one you feel is the most popular, the most representative, the one you’d recommend to someone to check out the artist. Sales figures can factor in this choice. Here the choice is also subjective, but objective factors can be raised. No need to argue - debates, with civility and reason, are encouraged though.

Rules: you must know a artist’s catalog fairly well. You might only know a few songs or albums; therefore you might say: Not Qualified. This helps because you must be familiar with an artist’s catalog to argue what is the album you’d most recommend...

No best of/ compilation LPs. Live albums welcome!

An album can be BOTH favorite and best. Sometimes that happens!

You can have two Bests if you like; sometimes you can’t choose!

You’re always allowed to change your mind and revise your opinion.

Keep it positive. We all have different tastes.

Some of my personal (subjective!!!) examples:
    Pink Floyd:
Favorite: Piper at the Gates of Dawn
Best: Dark Side of the Moon

    Zombies:
    Favorite/Best: Odessey and Oracle

    Nirvana:
    Favorite: In Utero
    Best: Nevermind

Keep in mind, the above selections are personal and subjective. I could debate the “best” choices but I won’t unless someone would like a response. Of course I realize “best” is a silly adjective but it’s got less syllables than most popular or most recommended!

Have fun. If the thread goes sideways or mean/angry, Gorts - feel free to close it. It’s meant to be a fun game with discussion, and at the end of the day, healthy recommendations!

    Cheers.

    King Crimson (My favorite band)

Best: In The Court Of The Crimson King

I chose this title for "best" as it is the band's most well known and best selling title. It was also a bit of a game-changer at the time of its release. This is the title I wold recommend to a K.C. newbie.

    Favorite: Larks' Tongues In Aspic

This album is King Crimson at their best IMHO. Hence, it is my personal favorite.

KC are my son's favorite. I love 'em as well.

Agreed on the debut as "best"- though Discipline created a new sound and re-calibrated the band from that point on. But I'd hand In the Court to a convert first, for sure.

Favorite: Red (maybe USA though - it's got the best of the'73/'74 plus Schizoid Man too!)

Though I'm not qualified to play to vote with these artists' complete catalogues, I agree with the Billy Joel, Carole King and Frank Sinatra choices here. I'm just getting into Bill Evans, and have always loved Etta - so: off to your "best" titles for listening!

This is the upshot of this premise: turn someone on to an artist via a recommendation of their best/most popular/career -defining album. Thanks for the tips!!

After much consideration, I picked these as well. Completely agree with the "best" choice too.

OK I will participate & entertain a select few preferences...

    1.Miles Davis (fusion era)

Favorite : Agharta (1975)...with Peter Cosey on guitar the closest we will ever get to a Miles & Hendrix collaboration, Cosey was as much under appreciated as Hendrix was acclaimed

Best : Jack Johnson (1971)...A perfect record

    2.Pere Ubu

Favorite : Live @ Long Horn Bar -1978...a searing document of the Ubu's at the height of their live powers

    Best : Dub Housing (1978)

    3.The 5 Royales

Favorite : Sing For You (1958)

Best : Dedicated To You (1957)...the premier Lowman Pauling work, his stinging x-ray solos influenced Steve Cropper, Eric Clapton & so many more young guitarists...

    A "true" 1950s era masterpiece

    4.Country Joe McDonald (solo)

Favorite : War War War (1971)...The March Of The Dead is the most harrowing anti-war song ever recorded

    5.Count Basie Orchestra

Favorite : The Atomic Basie (1957)

Best : his Decca sides w/ Lester Young

    6.Al Green

Favorite : The Belle Album (1977)...after the mysterious death of his girlfriend Al cut this masterpiece of transcendent soft soul & produced & even played a little acoustic guitar also on the record

    Best : Call Me (1973)

    7.Creedence Clearwater Revival

Favorite : Bayou Country (1969)...the original Fantasy deep groove pressing was 1 of the 60s finest sounding records not only by CCR but anybody.Period.

    Best : Willie& Poor Boys (1969)

    8.Randy Newman

Favorite : 12 Songs (1970)...Nobody cut through all the BS quite like RN during the early 70s.Nobody.

Thanks especially for the jazz music lovers. I need proper education on many artists in this genre.
