Early days, but favourites for Best Picture at present seem to be:

    The Irishman
    Marriage Story
    1917
    Joker
    Parasite
Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

I preferred Joker and Tarantino to the Scorsese, not seen the other 3 yet.
Little Women, Ford vs Ferrari also in the mix ?

Some think it' s too long. Some don' t like the de-aging technique used. Some think it' s slow and uninvolving.
Me, I think it 's fantastic.

Not much activity here because of the films or am I missing another thread?
    Nominations announced tomorrow..
Predictions or ones you'd like to see recognized?
I thought Julianne Moore was terrific in Gloria Bell, Pesci stood out to me more in The Irishman than DeNiro (stands out most when he plays closest to his age), Pacino.
Haven't seen all the probable contenders yet.

Joker, Irishman, 1917, Hollywood recognized in most categories as expected. Parasite got its due, however I didn't really like this film, did you??
I guess only real surprises were no Bale or DeNiro in Best Actor category, and that Pryce (Two Popes) probably took their spot.
Didn't see Ford vs. Ferrai, know Bale is terrific in general though.
    No Gerwig for director.
    Some opinions:
DeNiro wasn't Academy worthy in the Irishman.
Glad to see Pesci in Supporting, don't agree w/ Pacino there.
They say Pitt is the favorite but I never thought of him as anything better than adequate.
Good to see the huge ego of J. Lopez wasn't sated with a nomination for what looks like a trashy movie.
Happy to see Knives out for Original Screenplay.
I'm going to watch "Hollywood"(Tarantino) tonight and Marriage Story during the week.
Anyone surprised Motherless Brooklyn wasn't recognized? Another one on my list to watch.
Best Actor category is between Driver and Phoenix with Banderas as the dark horse. Best Actress is usually a clear cut winner it seems, can't imagine Zellweger will be beat.
Happy viewing for those who are going to see some of these films.

    Definite snubs:
    Frozen 2
    JLo

    Surprises:
    Kathy Bates
    Jonathan Pryce

Nominations that make me happy: The Lighthouse in cinematography
    Florence Pugh
    Todd Phillips
    Other takeaways:
1917 has definite momentum with key nominations but missing editing nom and zero acting noms
Hollywood is looking good but also missed editing nom
Irishman got the obvious noms but looks kinda stalled to me
Joker leads with 11 noms. Is that enough to get the best picture win?
Parasite scored well but missed the acting nom so it looks like an alsoran
And I hope the Gerwig snub doesn't start some toxic male crapola (I think it's already too late)

Unfortunately the only category I see once upon a time in Hollywood taking is probably cinematography. I doubt either Leo or Brad Pitt are going to win against their competition.

Sorry dude Deakins has it sown up for 1917. I think Tarantino has a good shot with screenplay, it will win production design, Pitt won the golden globe and is a favorite, and it has a decent shot at best film.

    What, nothing for Cats? :D

Janet Maslin on Twitter thinks Joker is this year's Green Book, and I think she may be right. 11 nominations?!

Lots of weird choices (ScarJo twice?) and omissions (Gerwig, Nyong'o). What the hell is Ford vs Ferrari doing there?
