    ----------------------------------------------------------

I could do a long essay on why I picked the films I chose, but let me just say I'm trying to think like the Academy does: I'm not necessarily picking the best film, but I'm picking the film I think will win the Oscar. I think in any other year, different people would win, but this is a pretty strong year with a lot of terrific contenders.

I gotta say, I'm floored that Once Upon a Time and 1917 didn't get nominated for Best Editing, because the post work on those films was massive. Trust me, even though 1917 appears to be "one shot," it's anything but: they had to put hundreds and hundreds of shots together seamlessly, and I think the editor worked tirelessly for something like 8-9 months putting that together. It's ridiculous that nobody realized that, because it's brilliant work. I also think the VFX in 1917 was the most beautiful, complicated, involved effects I've seen in years, but it's so good almost nobody will be aware of it. As far as I'm concerned, they should just give them the damn Best VFX award right now.

I almost picked John Williams as a sentimental favorite for Skywalker, because it most likely his final film score, but 1917 is fresh in my head from seeing it last night, and I thought it was a surprisingly moving, emotional score that really worked well.

I wonder if we all are going to get a big surprise?... If Hollywood doesn't win...what a trip.

  13. Agree with your list except for Rene Zelwegger winning although I’d prefer it be Scarlett

  14. Chris DeVoe

Chris DeVoe RIP Vickie Mapes Williams (aka Equipoise)

I'm happy that JoJo Rabbit got some attention. I hope Scarlett wins for her role in that film, but I really hope it wins for Best Adapted Screenplay.

I hope Once Upon A Time...In Hollywood doesn't win for Sound Mixing because Michael Minkler is a jerk.

She's nominated twice, and I picked her in the other category. Brilliant actress who deserves an award for sure. Also very, very hot (which does not hurt). She's got a great presence unlike a lot of other female actors these days.

I will be pissed-off and will throw a tomato at the Academy's headquarters, which is about a mile from where I live.

@Vidiot, I can agree with your picks except for your reasoning on Margot Robbie, which I don't see. What makes you think the Academy likes her for the award this year?

None of the other nominees thrill me.

I had Scarlett Johansson winning in Best Actress.

I can’t fathom how Dafoe was not nominated. His performance topped every nominee in that category in my opinion. The Lighthouse was robbed big time. Hoping for Quentin to win big this year. He really deserves it for this one.

I don’t get the great admiration for Margot Robbie either. I think she’s an okay actress, but not in the same league as many other actresses who have been nominated for awards in both acting categories over the years. The only other performance I saw in the supporting actress category is Kathy Bates in Richard Jewell, and I thought her performance was head and shoulders above Margot Robbie’s.

You know, none of these films suck, so I'm glad there's so many good movies out there. This is good for everybody: for the audience, for theater owners, for filmmakers, and for the studios -- nobody loses. More good moves are great for everybody.

I liked Once Upon a Time in Hollywoo more than any other film this year, but I have to say 1917 was exceptionally good, and it was a tremendous risk and a balancing act for the entire creative and technical team. That's a really tough film to pull off. Deakins should win just because of how audacious the cinematography and camerawork were: I think shooting this movie was probably 10 times harder to do than any other film nominated. On the minus side, it's a very monochromatic, brown, dreary film... but hey, it's war, so you can kind of go with that look. And it's consistent and you can see everything, and the actors look great... and it tells the story.

Tarantino vs Scorsese. Clash of the titans.
What a battle. Both amazing movies in their own way. I would punt for Tarantino.
Also on the Gerwig "snub", well..maybe it was, but a lot of the lib media protest too much & playing the gender card on this when it is probably not gender related. Works against them.
Although I would have personally put her in the running for Little Women. Amazing work.
You have to realise that its not only women directors who were snubbed down through the years. Scorsese was snubbed until he finally won for the Departed. There were at least 5 of his movies before The Departed I consider were more deserving of an Oscar. The Joker is well below Taxi Driver or The King Of Comedy.
