All excellent! Been listening to a lot of honeymoon Suite recently. Nice to see them get a rare mention on the forum!
Richard Oakes of Suede. He's an incredible player who seems able to play near enough anything he has to ; and whilst he always writes to the songs benefit - and not his instrument or his ego - when the song demands it he can pull out a blistering solo, though rarely. This means most people overlook his abilities.
Also, I can't believe no one's mentioned Trey Spruance of Mr Bungle / Faith No More / etc. A very talented player with a wide range of styles.
Some have been mentioned, but my list would include... Martin Barre (Jethro Tull) Jan Akkerman (Focus and solo) Bernie Marsden (Whitesnake and post-Snake) Neil Giraldo (some of his solos with Pat Benatar are, to me, some of the best of the 80s by any guitarist) Craig Chaquico (Jefferson Starship and solo) Dave Hill (Slade) Lindsey Buckingham (Fleet... well, you know)
Martin Barre (Jethro Tull, Solo) Vivian Campbell (Dio, Riverdogs, Def Leppard) Dave Davies (Kinks, Solo) Rik Emmitt (Triumph, Solo) Jim Matheos (Fates Warning, Matheos/Arch, Solo) Rick Medlocke and Charlie Hargrett (Blackfoot) Rod Price and "Lonesome Dave" Peverett (Foghat) Donald "Buck Dharma" Roeser (Blue Oyster Cult, Solo) Rich Williams (Kansas)
Jeepers! Nobody mentioned James Gurley, the incendiary noise-maker from Big Brother & The Holding Company? Easily the most original and ahead of his time of the golden age San Francisco guitar heroes.
On any given night, Steve Kimock has been the best guitarist, on the planet, since ‘95. He’s blown my mind countless time. Others: Guthrie Govan Scott Pemberton Neal Casal (RIP)
I'm gonna give a nod to Bill Nelson. He's well regarded by those in the know but he deserves more acclaim. I marvel at his skillful mastery of tone.
