I was shocked to see how this season ended, and now we're told this will be the end and there's not going to be another season to wrap everything up. They set up quite a few storylines and clearly there was more to be said in another 9 or 10 episodes.

Here's what showrunner David Hollander has to say about the surprise cancellation:

I enjoyed the show very much. It just never seemed to catch the spark needed to make it a blockbuster.

Show completely lost its mojo when the locale was switched to NYC.

I became quite attached to RD and his family. The team did well to develop the overall arc imo, given the way it basically rebooted with each season. The acting was fabulous all round. I do hope they’re allowed to finish the story.

Holy smokes... the star/co-producer is now saying this may not be the end after all!

To me this was a show that had such great potential but ultimately lost focus of what I thought was the most interesting angle. The first episode was a pretty unique idea and I was hoping they would continue in that vain. You have this fixer working for a law firm getting Hollywood elite, sports stars and others denizens of high society out of all sorts of jams. There is a lot they could have done within that framework. Instead it just got too involved with Ray's family life which to be honest was less than interesting to me. It just tried to be like the Irish version of the Sopranos but they were not able to pull off, it just didn't work. They should have just had a much more narrow focus on his team of fixers and all the messes they get into and out of, that's the novel and interesting part of the show. All the family drama and other characters were a distraction imo.

I stopped watching after Season 6. The first couple of seasons were exciting but I sort of felt like the show lost direction. Season 5 just bored the crap out of me. Season 6 started off good but I got bored again.

Big part of their problem was what to do with Abby who, in retrospect, had a wild character arc during her run. Each season found her in some kind of new 'direction'. Maybe the writers were simply trying to find the right balance for the outstanding Paula Malcomson. But she had more of a groove going during her Deadwood run so I, as always, blame the writers! 3 strikes and yr out, left LA - strike 1, lost Abby - strike 2, lost Avi & Lena - strike 3 AND 4!;)

They shouldn't DREAM of re-visiting Ray Donovan without bringing back Lena, Avi, AND LA!!!

I lost interest around the end of season six. When Bridget picked up the chainsaw and started dismembering bodies without blinking an eye, well, that was a problem. Overall, a good series for most of its run. I got through two or three episodes of season 7 and one absolutely implausible event (two actually) just made me say, "okay, that's enough". Liev Schreiber plays a great tough guy who is a man of few words. I've always liked him as an actor. Hopefully, he can find another vehicle to star in very soon.

I was quite happy to see her character die, except she kept coming back.

Season Seven kind of lost its way with the move to New York but would have liked to see one more season to resolve everything.
Good news.. Better Call Saul Season Four has finally hit Netflix !!!

Looks like Ray Donovan will get a "proper" ending

Personally, I think they should have ended it with his suicide. I got tired of Mickey going to, and getting sprung from, jail. It would have been okay once. But the idea that Ray always found himself in a position of power to get his brother or father out of prison was super unrealistic. That's just one example.

The show had to be watched each week, or at least each story line, as a stand alone piece. Otherwise it becomes like the movie Halloween in that you just can't kill the villain.

Back to Mickey. That he wins big only to screw it up and be a consistent loser is more than I can take. Having his money lifted by the woman at the beginning of Season 7 really took the cake for me.

Great idea for a show and some very entertaining episodes. But in the end they just ran out of ideas to try and keep the adrenaline rush going.

The acting has been superlative throughout. It had some lulls and hiccups along the way. There was certainly a lift when Vinessa Shaw and Ian McShane were in the cast. A shame that neither lasted longer.

Yes, I agree completely. The moment they'd veer off into the B-story with Bunchy or the C-story with Terry, I was outta there. Without Ray as the focus, I generally got bored... and the internecine battles between Ray and father Mickey even got a little wearying. Still, if you cut out Bunchy and Terry, the shows were only about 25 minutes long, and you can get through them quickly. :)

I did laugh at all the times Ray had to get rid of literal dead bodies when his clients ran into trouble. And I have to say, it was interesting this season that one of the writers finally said, "you know, the Donovan family have quite a few skeletons in their closet. What if some of those dead bodies from past shows resurfaced?" And that turned into some interesting problems to cover.

The sub-plot with Ray's half-brother Daryll was actually pretty interesting, where he manages to become a producer on a big action star's film, and things quickly go to hell after they get rid of the dead body when the actor accidentally kills his karate instructor during a samurai sword workout. Very much a black comedy.

I have to say, Avi and Lena added a lot to the show, working as Ray's assistants: the people who actually get their hands dirty breaking into computers, burying bodies, bribing police department clerks to look up addresses and driver's licenses and phone numbers and so on. I think the funniest moment in show history was when they encounter a judge who won't make a ruling that Ray's client wants, so they plant horrendous kiddie porn on the judge's computer. Ray and the computer expert show up to "help," and Ray says his famous line, "I can make this problem of yours go away." And the judge realizes he's up the creek and has no choice but to do what Ray wants.

They'll basically have to start over with a finale movie, because they just killed off <a major character> who was hired to replace Lena's role in the show. I have often said, if I ever owned a major business, I would want somebody who could basically do all the things that "Doug Stamper" in House of Cards and "Lena" in Ray Donovan do -- the dirty tricks squad. That could be handy in negotiations: "I'm really sorry you won't do this deal, Mr. Smith. But before you leave, let me show you these photographs."
