I think that's pretty accurate! Of course, no one could have predicted that the Warhol market would explode the way it did...but still, as Bob himself said it was a very "stupid thing to do"!
Since the original post didn't say the print was a print of Elvis, I didn't realise that. I still say Bob got the good end of the deal.
My fave: Pete Seeger was looking around backstage for an axe to cut Bob Dylan's cord during the electric set at Newport. This has been downplayed by Seeger & co but it is real and just too illuminating of the anti-establishment crowd that thought they could control Dylan and anyone else who might not want to lockstep with them. The notion of an older musician who claimed to stand for civil rights and freedom looking around for an axe to censor a younger artist is just the ultimate in absurdity and music trivia.
Yes, my read on what he has said after the fact is basically "damage control" and I am skeptical of it. The man was supposed to stand for peace and tolerance and freedom of speech and it is just too telling of his ilk that he was running around backstage looking for an axe when confronted with something he couldn't understand or control. At the time he was certainly taking the popular position, as we hear all the boos from Dylan's own fans. Illuminating!
As of this week, my favorite piece of absurd music trivia is that they're planning to make a movie out of ELP's "Karn Evil 9".
The only band not in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame that has all its members in the RRHF is the Traveling Wilburys.
The first three songs on Kiss' Animalize all deal with fire... I've Had Enough (Into The Fire) Heaven's On Fire Burn Bitch Burn
Just my attempt at humor. I think the main point is as you said: he wanted to pull the plug and silence the band.
Folkie Petie took an axe in hopes of a chop to Bobby's lectric jack. by the time his mission became failed Folk music became history and Rock n Roll moved 10 steps ahead.
