it does a beautiful job of not just being an outro to the song itself, but an outro to the album as a whole. it could go on forever.

The Smiths "That Joke Isn't Funny Anymore", with the augemented chords and Marr with the rare guitar solo. Morrissey singing 'I've seen this happen in other people's live, and now it's happening in mine...". Glorious.

Steely Dan "Black Cow", when the chorus finally resolves to the major 5th (that you were expecting after the first two choruses) and the sax solo kicks in, while the girls sing it out til the end.

Agree with previous mentions of Layla. Did you know that one of the most famous piano codas in rock was ripped off from Rita Coolidge? Dominos drummer Jim Gordon was her boyfriend at the time when they worked up the song together that became part of Layla. Coolidge says it was mostly hers because he wasn't a very good songwriter. She was upset when she found that she wasn't listed on the credits. Gordon later developed mental health problems and murdered his mother and went to prison.

The first one that springs to mind is the surprise tempo shift on Stand! - Sly & The Family Stone.
