Here’s a project I’ve been working on recently... using demixing software I’ve been rebuilding and editing the Monkees Live in Japan bootleg into a stereo recreation of the concert without the Japanese announcers taking over the first half of the songs. So far I’ve completed:

    Last Train to Clarksville

    I Wanna Be Free
I Wanna Be Free (Live In Japan - 1968) [Stereo Demix]

    Johnny B. Goode
Johnny B. Goode (Live In Japan - 1968) [Stereo Demix]

I’m almost finished with DW Washburn and once I’m finished with all the songs, I will post the whole concert in one, fully sequenced edit.

As a proof of concept, I would love this to get positive attention from Rhino and/or 7A Records and turned into a real release. I know 7A back in 2017 were looking into releasing this and were denied by Warners, but I do believe the copyright would be up on these as of 2019 since the recording is from 1968, right?

Best of luck! I’ve always wanted a listenable copy of this concert.

Wishing you all the best too... You may be correct about the copyright. I just hope Warners/Rhino doesn’t try to screw with you on this. The performance has been out there for long enough. Make it happen!

Thanks all for the well wishes! I hope you have enjoyed the content so far - I should be posting DW Washburn tonight! Also, here’s the cover art I’ve been working on for the entire show...

Nicely done. Was it just the 4 of them on the posted songs? If so, they've really improved from 66/67!

Sounds great, really great. Peter is really kicking butt on Clarksville.

But wow...was the near-trainwreck in the first 25 seconds of Johnny B Goode always there under the talking?

The solo segment of the concert is proving to the be the trickiest. Not only does the announcer talk more than usual but there's a nasty buzzing throughout many parts of the segment. When the announcer talk is removed there is still inherent damage to the recording itself requiring a lot of patchwork. The first 25 seconds of Johnny B. Goode is probably the most damaged section of all unfortunately so I fixed it the best I could.

You did great! Just confirming I guess that what's going on there is the result of tape salvage rather than an actual Monkee trainwreck!

I think I hear a Hammond organ in 'Johnny B. Goode'. If so, I think that's Peter playing it.

Here’s another fan cover art that’s pretty good too.

Actually, during the solo segments of the Japan concerts (which consisted of "Cindy" by Peter, "Johnny B. Goode" by Mike, "Gonna Build a Mountain" by Davy, and "Got a Woman" by Micky) they are each individually backed by The Floral. Well, at least on Mike, Davy and Micky's solo numbers. Peter's solo bit is truly solo as it's just him on banjo. Mike played guitar on his solo number and Davy and Micky just sing on each of their numbers. After the solo segments, The Floral left and The Monkees ended the Japan concert with "I'm a Believer" and "Steppin' Stone" as a four piece band again.

Davy I think. Peter was a much better keyboardist.

The only Monkees present on Johnny B Goode is Mike.

Thank you, I've wanted this concert without the announcers for many years, but never expected them to find the tapes. It sounds great! Amazing what technology can do.
