Never thought about it before, but probably the Ryman. No idea how many shows I've seen there and when you factor in various industry things that may or may not qualify as a concert (a TV taping of the "Nashville" cast performing live???), it would be impossible to have a definitive number. The Nashville Arena (whatever it may be called at any given moment) is likely the second. Earlier in the thread someone mentioned the Santa Barbara Bowl. I have been there once, but definitely one of my favorites.
Without listing the hundreds of Dead shows across the Midwest and East coast between 1977 and 1987, there were these local venues in Michigan : Pine Knob Amphitheatre Clarkston Meadowbrook Amphitheatre in Auburn Hills, Pontiac Silverdome (demolished) Olympia Stadium Detroit (demolished) Cobo Arena Detroit (still there? was around before Joe Louis Arena was built so maybe not) Joe Louis Arena Detroit (demolished) Harpos Theatre (East Detroit) Royal Oak Theatre (Royal Oak Michigan) Washington Theatre Royal Oak (demolished ) Fox Theatre (Detroit) Grand Circus Theatre Det. (located on Grand circus park at Witherell and Madison about one block east of the State theater which was originally called the Palms theater) Addams Theatre Detroit (demolished) Madison Theatre Detroit Capitol Theatre Detroit State Theatre Detroit Majestic Theatre Detroit Masonic Temple Detroit Michigan Theatre Ann Arbor Belle Isle Amphitheatre (original) Ford Auditorium Detroit (demolished) Michigan State Fairgrounds Bandshell Ferndale Theatre Punch &Judy Theatre Grosse Pointe Then there were hundreds of tiny clubs like Bakers Keyboard Lounge, Alvins Twilight Lounge, The Soup Kitchen, and others of similar 100 to 300-or-so person capacity. .. ,
Without a doubt, Knuckleheads Saloon in Kansas City, MO. Hundreds of shows at this point. After that, Schuba's Tavern in Chicago. I hope both survive.
The United Center in Chicago. U2 8 Peter Gabriel 3 Roger Waters 2 Depeche Mode 1 Genesis 1 Yes 1 Radiohead 1 Prince 1 Sting 1 David Gilmour 1 Smashing Pumpkins 1 Rush 1 REM 1 Star Wars in Concert 1
Probably the Academy 3 in Manchester, including when it was known as The Hop And Grape. Certainly Manchester Academy if all 4 venues onsite are included.
All in Dublin... 85 Vicar Street 71 Olympia Theatre 67 Point Theatre 63 O2 and 3Arena (same venue) The O2 was rebranded as the 3Arena, but it's the same building with no change to the interior. The O2 was the original name of the redeveloped Point, which was redesigned and expanded a decade ago. Several shows I attended were later released as albums or concert films. I stopped working there in the late-80’s. Nirvana played there twice, but I wasn’t at either show. I missed later performers such as Beck, Stereolab, My Bloody Valentine, artists that I love. But y’know… no complaints.
1. The Paradiso in Amsterdam. An old church in Amsterdam with excellent acoustics 2. Tivoli-Vredenburg in Utrecht. Has several rooms. The best one was designed for classcal music and has perfect acoustics, the rest is good enough as well. 3. Fluor in Amersfoort. Our local club. The basement of an old toothpaste factory and the place to see Dutch bands in the club circuit. 4. Afas Live in Amsterdam. Bigger venue, close to the ZiggoDome which is even larger and the Johan Cruijff Arena. 5. Ahoy Rotterda,. Went there a lot when I was younger, old sports hall designed for football and cycling. Sound can be crap, but a good technician can overcome the shortcomings of this hall.
Off the top of my head and aside from the Toronto Symphony a few times, partly because I ushered at Massey Hall briefly: Cream Fairport Convention Savoy Brown The Beach Boys There must be more, but I can't remember at the moment. Actually, I might have to change this to the Commodore Ballroom in Vancouver. That would be a longer list that I can remember since moving here in '83: Jesus and Mary Chain Devo Medeski, Martin and Wood Loudon Wainwright III Sharon Jones The Budos Band St. Germain Nomo ... Again, a short list off the top of my head.
we were both at the Cream show !!! You ushered at Massey Hall. You probably shined a flashlight at me when I was smoking a joint !!!
Ha Ha! If you were smoking a joint while the Toronto Symphony played, then maybe. Otherwise not, as I only ushered during Symphony performances. And that was only for a few weeks in 1980. I was not suited for the job. I remember Cream being a bit lacklustre and the headline in the Globe or Star the next day "For the leading white Blues band, the Cream seemed a trifle thin." Apparently it was June 5, 1968, rescheduled from April 22 which somehow was why I could get tickets at the last minute to a previously sold out show. I was in grade 8 and the parent of one of the other kids in my class who went drove us.
Places I've seen dozens of acts in include the old Hardback Cafe in Gainesville Fla, the 9:30 in DC, and Spaceland in LA. I wish to heck I'd kept a log of every show seen to type out a anywhere near thorough list, but in all three of those cases over 50 amazing shows in very comfortable and inviting places.
Up to age 18: Wolverhampton Civic Hall 18 - 24: Bristol Colston Hall and Bristol Student Union Anson Rooms 24 - present: Harrogate Royal Hall and City Varieties, Leeds Best Wishes, David
I was lucky that Metal bands came yearly to our town, when I was heavy into Scorpions, Ozzy, Maiden, Priest, Motorhead, ect... I had to drive 2 hours away to Montreal if I wanted to see the big name bands. It was worth it.
I went there in December 1999 to see Big Country! I was in the UK for other shows and made the trek from Manchester to Wolverhampton just for that one concert. Stayed in a hotel walking distance from the venue, and I think the band stayed there too. I was tempted to try to visit their floor but chickened out!
I don't often find people these days who have known the venue. That's great - I hope it was a good show. Which hotel did you stay in? Best Wishes, David
great photo..my biggest memory of the concert was Ginger Baker..I couldn’t take my eyes off him. Best live drummer I ever saw and I saw Moon and Bonham as well.
