I mean the song was the in our music book and I would teach it to my elementary school music students. The kids liked the song.

I heard it on Fess Parker's TV series. (I think it was a Disney series). (Yes Fess Parker played both Davy Crockett and Daniel Boone.)

And now I have the Smokey the Bear song repeating in my brain.

" prowlin' and a-growlin' and a- sniffin' the air..."

    Enough!

My grandmother gave me a coonskin cap for my 6th birthday. I only had a vague idea who Davy Crockett was. But apparently my dad was a huge fan when he was that age, so my grandmother just naturally assumed that I was a fan as well. I don't think she really understood that the TV show had been off the air for 25 years and that pop culture was constantly changing.

Being old, I watched both the Daniel Boone and Davy Crockett shows and can still sing the theme songs. But I preferred F-Troop, mainly for Wrangler Jane:

I was born in 1952 and I was Davy Crockett crazy as a 3 or 4 year old kid. I know that I knew the words to "Davy Crockett" and used to sing it all the time! (From memory now: "Davy, Davy Crockett, king of the wild frontier. Born on a mountain top in Tennessee, greenest state in the land of the free. Kilt him a bar when he was only 3 ...." ---that's all I got.) I know I had a coonskin hat - it had fake fur sides and a raccoon tail, but the top was some sort of brown colored vinyl. I grew up in Hawaii and wearing the hat in that weather would make my head sweat so much that it would run down my temples and forehead. But, as my mom used to love to tell everyone when I was older, "he refused to take it off even though his head was full of perspiration". (Remember when mom refused to say "sweat" because it was uncouth and instead would say "perspiration"?) I was also a big fan of the TV shows and was sad when Davy died in the Alamo. I also remember having a Davy Crockett t-shirt.

This is the original 1955 hit version. The YouTube description on this video notes that some CD reissues use an alternate take.
