I listened to Modern Times for the first time today. Been a Bob fan for about five years now, and finally got around to it after I saw the record on sale for cheap. First impressions are great! Man, I can't believe what a powerhouse Bob has been in the 21st Century. Looking forward to unpacking it further...
I was at this and a few other shows this run, great performances...this ended up being my last Dylan show for 16 years...

I've been compiling my dream Supper-Club-Unplugged album. The highlights from the Unplugged sessions were a breeze to pick out, but it's been an obsessive-compulsive pleasure to dive into multiple performances of Queen Jane/I Want You/My Back Pages from the Supper Club shows, in an attempt to find the definitive versions ("definitive"? Ha! No such thing when it comes to Dylan!).
What strikes me, listening again today, is just how strong and consistent the writing and performances are. “God Knows” is playing right now. I remember when it was a staple of his live set, back in the early 1990s. It was never a favourite, but this performance is so alive that I’m really digging it.
Another Self Portrait Deluxe Edition, disc one. Again, haven’t listened to the whole box set in several years. Beautiful stuff. Lockdown has its advantages.
Listening to the Par Garrett and Billy The Kid soundtrack. Not one of the major works from his canon but I kind of wish he’d done more of this sort of thing. It has a lovely vibe about it
Both exquisite collections -also the magnificent Tell Tale Signs- and the only 2 that I have yet to acquire in Deluxe form! I really want them to line up with the others on the shelf! Such revelations in both. Both sets floored me!
An absolute treasure trove of immense material. Despite that there’s only 3 discs worth of music, one definitely gets the less is more feeling. 3 discs but packed with greatness.
Exquisite is the right word. And I love the live recording from the Isle of Wight. Really enjoyed listening to ASP this afternoon. I have all the Bootleg Series in their highest level editions, including Big Blue, plus originals of all the copyright sets save for 1962. That is over 100 discs beyond his main discography. The breadth, depth, and quality across those discs is incredible, and endlessly fascinating.
I lack both deluxe editions of ASP and TTS, all of the copyright sets and as much as I regret it now Big Blue which I couldn’t justify at the time. I’ll have to make a list of what I’m missing at some point and make a start on getting what I can.
Playing catch up is expensive, but I wish you luck. The copyright sets you can probably just download unofficially. TTS 3CD can be pricey, but, if you’re patient, you should find a copy eventually.
Definitely man. It’s hard keeping up with Bob. Between albums, compilations, Bootleg Series, archive live box sets, and everything else it’s difficult. 20 years of collecting Bob and I’m still playing catch up, although I’ve got all the albums, all of the bootleg series except what I mentioned I’ve got those in 2cd versions and had to settle for the 6 disc Cutting Edge. I keep checking on TTS 3Cd and ASP 4Cd. I’ll be delighted if or when I get those two at some point.
