    Who do you feel are the ten most important people or bands who have had a significant impact or influence on 20th century music?

    My list is not definitive, and if I asked myself next week, it would be different, but today it is:


    Woody Guthrie

    Frank Sinatra

    Chuck Berry

    James Brown

    Bob Dylan

    The Beatles

    Eric Clapton

    Smokey Robinson

    Phil Spector

    Brian Eno


    I feel I can explain my rationales for each one if challenged.

    obviously the O.P. doesn't like jazz or orchestral music so.....
    how can his list mean much? just sayin'

    no Stravinsky?
    doesn't the op know anything about the significance of Stravinsky?

    or Miles Davis?
    really?
    the single most influential jazz figure of the 20th century
    That can't be debatable considering all the sub-genres he was instrumental in spearheading and all the
    legendary musicians that went through his bands

    even Duke Ellington can't say that!

    (any list without these two pretty much disqualfies the list-maker, IMO)

    I'll take that challenge.
    -I think limiting something like this is too exclusive and 10 is too arbitrary and small of a number. Way too much is missing and leaves out too much of a 100 years.
    -To not see one woman anywhere? Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin possibly
    -I don't see Smokey Robinson, Brian Eno or Eric Clapton in a top 10 - Berry Gordy is more vital than Smokey, Clapton no - Jimi Hendrix yes - but even then that's for one instrument only.
    -Jazz was enormous for the first 60 years - you need Miles Davis, Duke Ellington or Louie Armstrong on this
    -Michael Jackson and Elvis Presley are absolutely mandatory. I mean really Brian Eno over Presley and Jackson?
    -Yes there is plenty of electronic music for the last 50 years but many trace it back to multiple people besides Eno like Kraftwerk
