As this thread continues, gents, please realize eBay has some computer service guys offering SSD iPods with serious storage capacity at decent prices. Forum members should be buying them so we can sell them to each other down the line.

Kind of like how I'm stocked up for the coronavirus (not kidding).

    @Michael, I hear 'ya!!!

APPLE refuses to appreciate, especially on something that they call iPad "Pro" (which is supposed to stand for "professionals", correct?), is that by their dropping of usual connections (Headphones, USB connections, ETC). Well, I'm a professional, as I often fill-in on the radio doing morning drive, when they need someone to fill in. I often run the show (I'm responsible for the microphones, the controls on the board and the six lines of phones calls that we take (we're talk radio!). What I will often do is bring in my new iPad Pro 11 and I want to plug it directly into the control board for all kinds of sounds and musical fill, via what should be the headphones, but NOOOOOOOOOO. I have to use this ugly dangly thing (made by a another company) to be able to plug in the power AND use a headphone jack out of this PRO item. I have to do the same thing when doing my mobile DJ service on BOTH my iPad Pro 11 and my MacBook Pro computer, to hook up my sound system. Those dangly things makes things look cheap for starters, plus it's one more thing in the chain of needed things, that can fail me. So much for "Pro". APPLE just keeps dropping the ball on guys like myself with these connection changes, plus now it's nothing but trouble with Catalina and their killing of the 'iTunes" format. They have to make changes back soon or they are going to loose a lot of customers like myself!

Because I like what I know, and if it ain't broke...newer versions of iTunes mess with the things I value most and need most from my iPod/iTunes....specialised playlists, specific artwork, and so on. I do not adapt well to change, especially when it's not an improvement for me. I like the iTunes 10.7 interface, so if it still works, then I don't want to mess with it.

I keep forgetting to use my Nano...I bought a purple one, planning to keep it for specific things...playlists and albums I could keep chopping and changing every so often...but it didn't quite work out.

Yeah the car it replaced was a 2015 civic with all four options. Feels like going backwards to me. It bugs me that when I buy a new cd I can’t play it in the way home.

I thought that about my new car too, but just plugged it into one of the USB ports and it worked just fine. Might be worth a try?

Having CarPlay certainly doesn't preclude iPod compatibility. I have and use CarPlay on my 256GB iPhone, but the car is still iPod compatible [Mitsubishi Outlander].

My car will charge an iPod but not play it, especially when CarPlay is in use. I can run an AUX cable from the headphone jack, but prefer to do that with my Pono.

I've owned many iPods, including some of the ones in the article picture. I still have them (in varying degrees of functionality--a Nano I have has a cracked screen that I can only see 1/4 of, but it still works). I still have the old click-wheel my Dad bought me when it came out in 2002 or so.

Christ, the hours I used to spend on iTunes playlists!

The problem with ALL of Apple's stuff is how stingy they are on storage space. It's ridiculous. I think every iPod I've ever had topped out at 16gb because of the steep price.

I have decided that instead of trading in my current 256gb iPhone 7 after the next upgrade, I'm going to keep it as a media player device.

For me, the bad thing about iPhones and iPads, nifty as they are, is that after a few years you can't update the operating system any more, or apps, even though the hardware still functions. I love my iPods because they keep on keeping on, and when the batteries die, I guess I'll try to replace them - but they've already stayed in service longer than any smartphone I've owned.

At home I can connect the ipod to my stereo pre amp. One end has rca connection the other plugs into the ipod charging port.
In car one USB to charging port. No need for auxiliary.

There is bound to be a lot of variability here. Some USB sockets will only charge, some will cope with USB drives, some will support iPods. All I was suggesting is that there is nothing about CarPlay (which, as a long standing fan of iPods in various cars is actually really good) that should stop a car from supporting iPods.

I have used iPods connected via Aux or an FM transmitter, iPods connected via USB with full control via the head unit, USB sticks controlled via the head unit, iPhones via Bluetooth and CarPlay over my last 5 cars. Bit of a jungle out there, really. Given that most of us only change cars every few years, about the only useful advice I can offer is that if your music library is stored in a lossless format you can convert to any other format without losing too much if your next car only supports limited formats.

My iPhone has 100GB music in Apple Lossless on it at any given time which is easily accessed via CarPlay.

On your last sentence, can I assume that you don’t subscribe to Apple Music? If I recall moving lossless (or any files) from your hard drive library to the phone is a chore if the phone also accesses their streaming service.

I fear that I have done something dire, as I was trying to add some songs via an external SSD 500gb drive to my newer iPad Pro11. What I did was I updated my iPad Pro 11 to IOS13 and now when I hook it up to my Macbook Pro that homes my iTunes library, it says that I have to update my Macbook Pro to hook that iPad Pro 11 up now. This APPLE crap sucks, because I don't want to update that computer as I fear what it wants is that new horrible "Catalina" update. That thing will kill my use of so many things that my wife and I use, I can't even begin to start.

    Any suggestions, APPLE pro peoples???

There is a way to backtrack to an older software version (I’ve done it with iTunes on a Windows laptop), but I don’t know how you do it with the OS on an iPad.

I haven’t updated to Catalina on my Macbook yet either—thanks for the tip!

Took me a couple of years to get everything ripped or transferred into iTunes and organized. Mainly happy with it, and part of that is indeed the "time & effort" factor. Buddy of mine lost all his iTunes lib when his iMac's hard drive crapped out. I devoted time/effort to recover the non-backed-up music (a mere 10k songs) from his iPod and onto his new machine. Shortly thereafter, he embraced Spotify. De gustibus... At least I was rewarded with a restaurant meal. One thing I have found to be true over the years—this includes but transcends audio—is that no matter how much you like or enjoy something...anything...someone's gonna be poking holes.

Then there’s the people who had items in their library forcibly and completely removed by iTunes music match (my understanding is anything with an ID tag that iTunes didn’t recognize—i.e. anything they didn’t sell in their online store). Pretty much put me off of iTunes for good. The latest version I have is so unwieldy to use, it’s pathetic. I noticed they also seemingly took away any re-encoding capability (like changing mp3 to wav or otherwise).

I’ve used Apple products for 20+ years, but I hate that they do stupid stuff like that.

I had a great i-pod that was the last generation with a hard drive. It had a good sounding DAC and I really loved it.

When the hard drive died I invested in one of those conversion kits to switch it over to a flash drive. I’ve upgraded computers before, switching CPUs adding cards, and ram etc. I thought it would be easy.

It would have been except the case was glued to the face with some diabolical adhesive. It bent or broke every dedicated tool that I had purchased for opening iPods. I finally used some very thin metal pieces of scrap to slide in there and break the seal. The case was bent up and unsightly by then, and it still wouldn’t come apart. When I finally was able to pull it open, the force ripped the connector right off the board. A total loss and I was out about $125.00 for the conversion hardware and flask drive.

I went out and bought a Sony A-45 Walkman with AptX Bluetooth, DSD capability, and a more versatile filing system that parses the music, by song, artist, album, or genre. It is smaller, cheaper, and it sounds better.

I loved the iPod but I don’t miss it. The newer generation of hi-res digital personal audio players is superior to the iPod. Apple abandoned the platform anyway so I’m not going to extremes to keep it going.

I do use Apple Music and don’t find it a chore moving lossless files from my PC to my phone. If I go to settings and uncheck the sync library option before syncing with iTunes I lose downloaded Apple Music songs from the phone (which I can always download again) but can sync with my iTunes library which is predominantly ALAC files ripped from CD. After using iTunes to sync, I check the sync library option and when prompted select the “keep music” option.

Another option I have used is to use a third party player (Foobar and Onkyo HF Player are the two I have used) to handle lossless music and then leave the native Apple app for Apple Music. The reason I abandoned that approach is that the third party apps don’t work well with CarPlay.
