I suppose I have to take into account how I felt at the time (given my age, impressionability, education, etc.). Though there certainly were better shows (from an artistic and/or even a sheer entertainment standpoint) I saw later, I remember being absolutely floored by the Twilight Zone episode Terror at 20,000 Feet. I'm sure I saw it as a re-run, as I probably was about 10 years-old at the time (roughly five years after it originally aired). I remember my mother getting ready to go out and running to tell her what was happening during each commercial break. Is that thing really there? What is it? What's he going to do about it? What could anyone do about it? Maybe he really is crazy! Don't open that curtain!!!!!

First show I thought of was the Fawlty Towers episode "Waldorf Salad."

Oh, my god, that was weird-city. I think FOX had to run 2 or 3 disclaimers warning viewers how disturbing the episode was going to be... and they were right.

Agree this was disturbing, really too much so for my taste! Really a "memorable" episode (but not to me in a good way) and I'm surprised that so many think this is one of the best.

To me, best X Files episodes are "Jose Chung's From Outer Space" with Charles Nelson Reilly (Season 3, Episode 20) and "Clyde Buckman's Final Repose" (Season 3, Episode 4) with the great Peter Boyle.

Much different tone to those episodes than "Home," - and that's an understatement!

    Twilight Zone-Walking Distance

"Advertising executive Martin Sloan (Gig Young), age thirty-six, is exhausted by the hectic pace of life in New York City. One day, while in an especially disgruntled mood, Martin goes for a drive in the country and winds up not far from his old home town. He stops, leaves his car at a gas station and sets off on foot to the town. Mysteriously, he arrives to find things exactly as they were when he was a child. Then reality sets in. His short walk has taken him a long, long way...much farther than he thought...all the way to The Twilight Zone."

As an adult, if that doesn't get you a bit misty eyed, well I don't know what to say.

I love "Clyde Buckman's Final Repose". I can't recall any other comedic episodes of X-Files. One of my favorites. I picked "Home" because it was so disturbing and intense.

Entirely forgot about Fawlty Towers. “Basil the Rat” is a serious contender for best ever episode for me.

When they post sign-up sheets at my work for various events or functions or availability for overtime etc, I often write down John Tuttle.
I actually heard one of the supervisors asking a coworker : " Do you know a John Tuttle ?"

Yes, and I thought that was quite good. Lithgow was great. I’m not sure if it had a different ending. Don’t tell me one way or the other. I think I’d like to see that again at some point.

Didn’t Seinfeld essentially steal that for its “Susie” episode?
