Ok revisiting this box and in particular 6/26/73. As Archtop mentioned the key sequence to this one a while back: He's Gone--> Truckin'--> The Other One--> Me and Bobby McGee--> The Other One--> Sugar Mag. holy cow. Talk about resurrection. A rather, dare I say boring show up until that point. (Though I like the Playing in the Band a lot). Before listening I watched the Dave Lemieux promo video for that show. He said you could tell it’s going to be a great show cause they opened with Casey Jones. IMO It’s actually a Dead on arrival Casey Jones and it takes them an hour until they reach playing in the band to get any real momentum. But oh that redemptive glorious second set jam....
I agree. That is my least favorite first set in the box. But, boy do they make up for it in the second set!!
That one is definitely the least played of the box for me. In fact I think I only gave the whole show a shot once. It was really overshadowed by everything else. It's been a good while though -I'll revisit and just start off w/ 2nd set
Neither one is as good as Vancouver 6/22/73, of course, but that’s one of their all-time greatest shows.
For my money, that's the best sequence in the whole box. The last 5 minutes of the back half of The Other One, great googly moogly! Phil-orchestrated melt-down mayhem bliss!
Strangely enough though, they seem to all be from 1974 (beardless Jerry). I don’t think there are any June 1973 pics in there.
They could’ve used some RFK 6/9/73 pics even though that show isn’t in the box. Maybe they’re waiting for when they do release that show?
Especially when you consider how much thought must have gone into taping the shows, officially or unofficially, at the time. Hardly anybody seems to have taken a camera along.
I love that side stage shot. It helps me realize that one thing these guys learned at the Acid Tests was to play music under the oddest of circumstances. The PA is tilted to disperse the sound and it's no big deal. The stage was their sanctuary.
Donna is pregnant in that photo. Maybe a few months. Here she is post-baby...from the Pacific Northwest book A Key to Every Door. Photo by Richard Pechner
I’m not familiar with the timeline of Phil’s instruments. I’m assuming the picture is a summer ‘74 picture or close.
